Roommate blunders

I'm currently renting a townhome with my fiancee while she finishes up college, and for the first year we lived with my friend David. All was well. Unfortunately, he had to move out when the lease expired back in August. We figured we'd get another friend in, and renew since we liked the place. So here's how it unraveled...

1) My friend Scott agrees to move in for a year beginning of July. Lease is due for renewal August 1st. Around the end of July Scott tells me that due to family issues, he can no longer move.

2) I scramble to find a replacement, and have to resort to craigslist. I find a fellow university student, who moves in August 1st. Whew.

3) October, my roommate tells me he no longer has enough money to pay for school and thusly, is moving back home. He gives me November's rent and leaves around the end of October, even though he signed the lease until July 2009.

4) Early November, I find an acquaintance from a university club I'm in who is willing to move in and take over that portion of the lease.

5) Mid November, I find out that he can't move out from the place he's currently at. Back to craigslist I go.

6) I find a roommate who is coming down from Jacksonville to go to UCF, and he can move in by the 3rd week of December. I agree to eat 3/4 of the month's rent to get him moved in. He comes down in early December and stays for a few days to take care of registration at UCF. Picks move in date as the Sunday before Christmas.

7) Sunday rolls by, and no word from him. I try calling his cell phone, which is turned off. I send him an email.

8) Today I get a call from his parents up in Jacksonville. They said he got a DUI the night before he was supposed to move in, and is sitting in jail. It being his second DUI in 5 years, he had his licenses suspended, and is no longer coming down to UCF.

9) To be continued...

This is fucking fun :)

Go outside Home Depot and ask if anyone want to move their entire family to a nice room for cheap!

Just pin an ad up on the bulletin board of a couple sorority houses. Stress the idea that they can save money if two share the same bed.

Sounds like you need to start taking deposits.

I already have deposits from two of them. Lot of good it did me there, except prolong my expense of paying for a full month by myself.

What I really need to do is just move into a 1 bedroom and be done with it, but I'll lose my own security deposits, potentially be fined for breaching my lease, and be miserable in a smaller place.

Either way, I'm not seeing a winning situation come of this.

Bah... I'd never want to live alone. I'm thinking about getting an apartment sometime soon (still living with parents...), but I want to make sure that I can cover all of its expenses myself, so I don't have to rely on a roommate, even though I'll most definitely want one (and a close friend is interested in it). *sigh*

How long are you leaving your ads up before you select someone? Or are you just taking the first caller? You should make it like an open, have the plac eup for a week or two and when people enquire tell them all the same date to come around. Then pick from the pool that shows up.

Living alone here. No roommates to deal with since I moved off campus more than a year ago.

I like.

This could work. Do make sure to get everyone tested for STDs first. :p
You know, just in case.

Shouldn't the guy who signed the lease still be paying? There are consequences to breaking a lease. Sounds like you are a pushover.
