roomate said he had a "buddy" run a "scanner" on my house

It depends. You can most definately run a spetrum analyzer on a home to pick up all the RF.

no shens.

-edit- and depending on the encoding it can probably tell you the normal application - like a video camera, a phone, 802.11 wireless.

don't know, probably 2.4 Ghz. So sure your neighboor could set it off.

Spidey is right. Almost all unlicenced conusmer electronics broadcast on 2.4. Somtimes you'll find them on 900mhz and 5.8ghz but 2.4 is the most common

well my roomate is insinuating that i have our house under surveilance. I am not that paranoid.

I jsut told him to tell his bug sweeping buddy not to quit his day job because wireless video transmits on the same frequency as our router.

Also, if your friend is using wireless video transmitting devices like those popular X10 cameras ppl use to watch their kids while in another room, they can be USED AGAINST YOU. All someone has to do is buy an X10 and drive around looking for ppl who have one to see whats going on inside the house.

Cracking X10

900mhz, 1.2Ghz, 2.4Ghz, and 5.8Ghz (and a lot in between)

microwave, cell phones, a lot of electronics, etc can set those cheapo scanners off

ok but is there a way for a device to say "yes absolutely this is definitely a wireless video signal and nothing else"

I say no since a signal is just radio frequency converted to ones and zeros and vice versa.

Is there any reason why your house would be under surveillance?

yes but its kinda tin foil hat far fetched.
Would a private party want to do it or would you be under watch from the government?

again in a tin foil hat far fetched way the possibility of both.

Depending on what the transmitter is doing (no encryption, etc), then if you have a reciever that can pick up the signals you can just channel surf. Very much like the x10 stuff. Rather unlikely though, more likely that he just picked up a signal and was like OMG we're being watched!!!

yeah I'm going to go with the notion that he's just a damn paranoid fool.

Now I think I am going to get a wireless video jsut to piss him off.

Screw that, just get a bunch of those dummy cameras and hide them around the house.

How bout, turning off circuit breaker to see if its still picking up a signal.
If not, than unplug all devices that transmit a wireless signal, phones, routers, etc.....
One by one plug each in to see which device was setting of the scanner.

But if you still pickup a signal even with the breaker turned off, than it would be hard to pinpoint where exactly the signal is coming from... a nearby home or maybe there is something in his house transmitting but I wouldn't know how you would actually locate it without doing a full complete physical search of the house.

I know his buddy didnt do any of those things you suggested to prove that there was a device transmitting. he is just full of sh1t and i called him on it and cant wait to go home an dmock him for his stupidity and irrational paranoia.
