I think the corner has moved further down the road, if not even around an additional corner or two. Since the leader in the research in this field Jon Schon has been shown to fake data and research results. He has lost his postion at Bell Labs.

All the work in this area is not bogus. One promising path is through the use of powdered materials being formed instantaneously into alloys with the use of explosives rather than the usual melting processes. Earlier efforts have been plagued by the non-homogenous nature of the alloys formed by the older methods. Small areas of a large clump of material would appear promising but were hard to isolate and separate for close examination.
