Rookie to home stereo question

I was thinking about home stereo setups.

with the setup that has 5 speakers and a sub....You put the center on top of the tv usually and 1 speaker on each side of the tv (usually)

now with the last 2 they are supposed to be around your chair or couch or whatever.

How are these speakers getting sound from the receiver? are they connected by wire? and if so how can you conceal the wires and not run the risk of tripping over them in the middle of the room.

EDIT:I live in an apartment and can't tear up carpet

yeah, that's a pretty tough thing to do

i actually made mine "disconnectable" i.e. i solder on quick disconnects to them, and i only run the surround wires when i'm watching a movie

in my old place, i used to do as was said above and shove 'em under the molding....there's usually no easy solution...unless you've got a basement and you can drill through floor and run them underneath..

if youre in an apartment or on the second floor of your house, its best to run it between the carpets and floor moldings. pretty simple but takes more cable.

otherwise you can drill through your subfloor and run it underneath. we did that with the subwoofer rca cables in my house cause it was simpler.

I actually just got done wiring my house for surround speakers. What I did was put a speaker jack (a wallplate with connectors for two speakers - you can get them at Radioshack or any hardware store) in each wall, and then ran the wire under my house. Then I just hooked the receiver into one plate and the speakers into the other. It has a nice clean look to it.

and can you get more if you need it?

depends on the speakers. Some come with 0, some come with 15', some come with 50'. You can always buy more - speaker wire is fairly cheep as well.
