yeah, that's what I've always thought, but for soem reason after I watched it again, it just didn't seem worth all the trouble everyone went through (couldn't ya just make a copy of the friggin' thing?!)

Yeah, but it doesn't make sense otherwise. They didn't mention *anything* about the peace agreements before they got the case.

And no, I don't believe you can just make a copy :)

I think its pretty clear the case is filled with the irish chick Deirdres dirty panties. The backstory is that she soiled herself during an IRA party and that dirty bald headed pervert gained access to her "fresh hamper" setting off the chain of events in Ronin. Once the Russians heard there were dirty soiled panties in play a bidding war ensued. There was a sequel in which the Japanese find out about the panties and go ape shit crazy to get them.

Just like in Pulp Fiction, what's in the case doesn't matter. What does matter is that everyone wants it.

So, real, non free iPod answer, the case is a McGuffin. Though, it is suspected it is likely some kind of blackmail material against the Russian dude.

The fact that the russian mob and irish terrorists both wanted it, and the CIA wanted to keep it out of their hands, leads me to think it was information of some nature. Probably undercover agent names, business documents linking clandestine operations, etc.

A dirty panty thread necro after 13 years? Holy cow.

This does remind me to watch the movie again.

Only the Russians and the Irish wanted it. The US wanted the girl's boss, who was likely going to use the case to help him not be captured by the US. De Niro even says as much. The CIA wasn't as interested in keeping the information out of the hands as much as it was interested in catching Seamus.
