OK, I've seen this in the theatre and now on video twice. I still can't figure out what was in the aluminium briefcase. Anybody have a theory (or fact)?

They never said in the movie what was in the case. [Deniro]What's in the case?.....what's in the case?....What is in the case?[/Deniro]<--had to do that, sorry.

It was alleged to be "an item of great power." Probably information of some kind. The whole point of a good movie/drama is to make you think.

All the security around the case and how people were willing to kill for it made the allure of The Case all that much stronger. I bought this movie, BTW. The car chase scenes make excellent HT Demos. :D

I couldn't figure out what was in the case either. It wasn't supposed to be figured out, i guess!
About HT Demos, my favorite scene is the racing one in Star Wars episode 1 The Phantom Menace

You mean the whole time DeNiro, the Solaris chick and company were just after Marcellus' soul?

I don't think even the producer/writer knows what's in the case. It didn't matter...

While some movies make you think over and over after it has ended what a certain item was/did... this wasn't likely one of those movies.

Certainly one of my favorite movies and grossly under-appreciated by too much of the population. This is THE movie for car chases. English Accent: What a bloody good flick!

I'm guessing a nuclear material.

An omnipotent midget that was going to rule the world.

The way its written you'll never "figure out" what is in the case, its up to you to decide what is in the case.

Ronin is an awesome movie, I might have to watch it again tonight.

I agree that it was terribly underated and unappreciated. Car chases were great. Didn't DeNiro do a lot of his own driving, i.e. the emerg brake 180 through the town square?

Great movie.
It doesn't matter what was in the suitcase.

"So what color is the boathouse at Hereford?

I think the DVD has an alternate ending? Maybe that tells you?

huh?! who's seen this?!

*SPOILER**

I have seen it. The end where Ronin and the Frenchman are chatting in the coffee house? They are talking about Deirdre (sp?) Denior says "she'd never come back here again." At that point you see the girl walking up the stairs towards the door of the cafe. A van pulls up and a bunch of guys drag her into the van. They say "we'll show you what we do w/traitors!" That's the alternate ending. <--the only thing that sucked about the whole movie. The alternate ending was a waste of time, IMHO.

I thought it was an awesome movie but I hated the fact that they never revealed what was in the sutcase. I guess they couldn't think of putting anything there that was so important.

Yeah, I'm sure they couldn't think of anything to put in there. Maybe they wanted wannabe film-critic fanboys to discuss the movie for years to come...

Uhh... I thought what was in the case was rather obvious.

I haven't seen the move in quite a while, but you'll remember that right after the case was acquired, they spoke of peace agreements with Russia (I think?? I don't remember).

Anyway, a peace treaty/agreement/... was in the case methinks.

yeah, that's what I've always thought, but for soem reason after I watched it again, it just didn't seem worth all the trouble everyone went through (couldn't ya just make a copy of the friggin' thing?!)

Perhaps it was an official franchise certificate allowing the carrier of the case to open up their own Tim Hortons anywhere they wanted.

Possibilities vary by country:
Britain: A jar of seasoning
France: Soap
Russia: Smooth toilet paper
Germany: A drivers license
