i dont' know, i think he just got fat and lazy once he got the paycheck.

i haven't seen anything from him to indicate that he will ever be competitive.

Nah, breaking the NCAA total yards rushing record means he sucked in college. Honestly though, I don't think many really expected him to be a premier RB in the NFL.

He was a first round pick so obviously people did think he would be good.

Dayne was great in college because he was a tank and he had speed. He just ran over everyone and when he created a hole, he was gone. He ended up smashing all sorts of NCAA and Big Ten records including Ricky Williams' NCAA career rushing yards record. When he got to the NFL, he showed up overweight and thought that he could move like Barry Sanders or Marshall Faulk instead of being the power running back that he was. I believe he actually led the Giants in some rushing categories in his rookie season.....it was all downhill from there though.

Dayne ran well against the SD defense. Winning the Heisman does not equal to great pro success, lets run a list:

QB's:
Andre Ware (Lions)
Ty Detmer (Eagles)
Gino Torretta (Doliphins)
Eric Crouch (Gone Fishing)

RB's:
Rashaan Salaam (Bears)

WR's:
Desmond Howard (Packers)

You gotta admit, Howard was a heck of a return man for the Packers their super bowl year.

nooo man... he did NOTHING for the Giants... he always got hit behind the line, at the line... he couldn't explode out of the gaps...

poor guy tried though... he cut his weight down, and it ended up as something he did at several training camps over the yrs.

his weight wasn't really the problem, he was not fat... he trimmed himself to try to give him an extra edge...

but he just doesn't prob. have enough fast twitch muscles to excel at the NFL level... he's not that talented.

The Giants had a need at RB that yr, and he was actually a 'safe' bet because he was so prolific in College... and the Giants braintrust knew he wasn't a speed kind of back, but the Giants weren't looking for a 'west coast' back, but a bruising, clock killing, possession back that wears the defense down...

Turned out this guy was tooo slow.

Look at the Jacobs guy drafted this yr by the Giants, 6'5"? 260 lbs? yet he looks faster than Dayne.

Desmond Howard was a Super Bowl MVP. Take him off the list please.

Dayne was a fantastic college RB, one of the best I've ever seen. I attended a few games when he ran for 150+ yards, and the guy was a monster.

The problem is, a great college RB isn't necesarilly a great NFL RB. Dayne is a big strong bruising back (Jerome Bettis, Christian Okoye etc), but he runs as if he's a small back. He dances, tries to pick his hole etc. A guy that size should basically hit a hole hard, or, if it isn't there, just create one and pick up 2-3 yards.

He kicked ass in college IIRC. I remember his last year at Winsconsin when OSU played them and Dayne just dissected our defense like it was nothing.

interesting, Dayne is quoted as saying he preferred Denvers Offense over the Giants offense because shanahan preaches one cut and run down hill.

i don't remember the giants ever asking anything different of him. shoot, no one on the giants wanted to see him making multiple cuts.

but after saying all that, it's not as if dayne had a great game last night. 3 rushes for 6 yds, yup, no different than what he used to do for the giants.

for the record, in my OP, i wasn't seriously asking if this guy was good in college, i'm aware of the facts that he won the heisman and was a first round draft pick. obviously he was good, but watching him now, it's hard to believe he was any good was my point.

to me, he is one of the biggest first round dissappointments i've seen in a long time.

Probably true, but Cleveland might argue that Tim Couch was one of the biggest, too ;) . I actually felt sorry for him, though. I could never really figure out if it was Couch that sucked or Cleveland's line.

Probably both.

In college he piled up his yards behind a great O-line and was a four year starter, and faced a lot of medocre defenses. Lots of people were saying the Giants were reaching when they took him in the first round. They were right... (Big Ten RBs don't have a great track record recently)

ps Desmond Howard was a bust too. The Redskins drafted him at #4 overall or so. They were expecting a premiere WR, not a kick returner. You draft punt returners in the 3rd round or later.
