Romney is about to drop out of race

It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. I know all politicians are phonies, but he takes phoniness to its logical extreme. He leaves you no real way of knowing what he believes in, so you're basically electing an expensive suit and an even more expensive haircut. I have found it remarkable through this campaign season how he has somehow managed to stake out the conservative side of the Republican race given his record - maybe he hypnotizes the pundits with his extra-shiny hair and elaborate makeup.

Now I have to decide whether to call the bet I have with another member of this board, who bet me $50 that Romney would not only be nominated, but elected President . . .

Now watch the dirt fly between McCain and Huckabee ....... this ought to be a hoot!

I think it'll be a low key campaign for the remainder on the republican side... the Huckster seems to have been running for a VP slot all along, and I think he's really close to getting it.

If you think McCain will ask Huckabee to be his VP you are sadly mistaken. He will drop all/any ties to him like a bad habit.
I'm sure he already has someone in mind and it isn't the Huckster.

maybe if his goal is losing 😉

McCain's a sharp guy... he's certainly outsmarted Rudy, Romney, Thompson, etc. it doesn't take a genius to know that he's going to need someone who can secure the south and get the base out as his running mate.

if it's not Huckabee, my money is on the governor from FL or SC.

That's my opinion as well ....... more than likely Charlie Crist.

Apparently Romney has spent 50 million of his own money in his efforts to get the nomination. There's something seriously wrong with wanting to be President that badly.

I was reading "Ender's Game" again recently and there was a quote that echoed something that has long bothered me.

In effect, the quote said that you have to realize that the only type of people who acquire great power are those who desperately want it.

That's the main reason why all our politicians seem alike, and why nothing ever changes no matter who we elect. Power will never flow towards the people when every single person who could help change that is power-hungry.

Totally disagree. There always seems to be one or two honest candidates running. But they never get the support. Americans are just bad voters.

Damn that Bush. It's all his fault. He ruined it for insincere lying phonies, and other typical cardinal Republican ideals.

Actually you aren't disagreeing with the quote, you just didn't think it all the way through. You're actually supporting my point. It's not a coincidence that the honest non-power hungry people don't get voted in. Support doesn't just come out of nowhere. There's a formula to it, and it includes having a lot of the people who are currently in power on your side, and that doesn't come cheaply. At some point everyone has to decide whether they want power or if they want to be "honest." There was a quote earlier in the thread that was insightful......

good to know elections aren't -- entirely -- for sale.

You're thinking in the wrong currency. I'm sure McCain has exchanged something.

Nonameo's exactly right. If you're not willing to compromise some important things, you will remain one of those honest "also-rans" that you were talking about.

Joe Lieberman has been attached to the hip of McCain ever since he endorsed him.

I'm sorry but I don't think McCain's that stupid.

Huckabee would be a hundred times as good a choice as Lieberman, and I don't even think Huckabee will get the nod.

Since Romney has now made it official and dropped out, the next moves may be up to McCain. Not only does McCain have to heal some wounds in the GOP, a bunch of heels in the GOP will have to kiss McCain's butt. Either that or make themselves persona non grata in the larger GOP.

Life comes at you fast.

McCain has a lot of options now. We can only sit back and watch how he plays his cards.

Jokingly mentioned this to a co-worker yesterday after he said that McCain would probably pick Huckabee. Personally, I would like to see a moderate republican and moderate democrat both running on the same ticket

Thank GOD he won't be McCain's VP choice. It'd make the McCain ticket unvotable for almost any Conservative.

McCain alone is enough to seal that deal. 😉
