If a politician campaigns for something, votes for that something and then ends profiting when it passes it is an ethical violation and a conflict of interest. The obvious implication being (s)he supported it for his own good, not the good of the nation.

Now OTOH, he campaigns against it, votes against it and it passes anyway and (s)he manages to make a profit? There's no conflict of interest (except the conflict with his own personal interest).

(Yes, I'm aware Romney didn't actually vote because he held no office.)

And if you read the more detailed accounts the blame for this falls on the govt people (e.g., Rattner) who carried out the bailout. They got out maneurvered by the guys running the hedge fund and consequently blew a bunch of taxpayer money. But then again, what's new?

This is much todo about nothing. First of all they did invest in an investment company. If the Investment company invested in the auto bailout, they may not have even known about the specifics. This is like you investing in a mutual fund. You would not be responsible for what the mutual fund happens to invest in. This is really stretching the truth to suit your needs. It is pure baloney. Some of the president's investments invested in China. So what?

If you invest money in a green company and they purchase solar panels from China does that mean you are selling out your own country?
