Rollo's 5800U Doom3 Benchmarks

I couldn't resist, and I have to say it was pretty cool hearing the FlowFX spin up again.

Doom3 on the other hand, did not share my enthusiasm:

10X7 0X8X High Quality
20fps

10X7 0X Medium Quality
22.3fps

10X7 Quincunx/4X
17.7fps

(all advanced options on except vsynch)

Ouch. Guess I was wrong last year when I said the 5800 would be the card for Doom3! In any case, it was good to get the big dog back in my case, if just for a moment. I think I'll go and see how it actually plays now.

ouch is right...worse than i expected! slower than a jetway!

I don't know what a jetway is, but pretty slow indeed. It wasn't the greatest just playing either.

Oh well. Back to GT.

How are you getting 20 frames on your 4400? My 4200 at 245/490 (underclocked as a result of fried core thanks to overclocking too high) gets around 15fps with everything enabled (including AF and trilinear (I checked the config files, they're defaulted on) at 10x7 medium quality.

Anyway, back on topic, I had a feeling you'd post 5800U benches, Rollo. It's interesting to see how the products change performance between initial release and refresh, so we may see yet another impressive performance boost between NV40 and NV45... Though it is kind of strange that the 5800U posts such low framerates considering its NV3x lineage, which seems to do fairly well in Doom 3...

There is a good chance he has a faster CPU/More RAM/faster FSB than you do. Also, his 4400 comes with 128mb of memory, and at higher clock speeds. I don't know the specs of your 4200, but if you have the 64mb version, I can definatly see where he gets the extra 5fps.

Since hes GPU limited anyway, every clock cycle from his 4400 helps.

First of all forcing AF on GF4s kills perf. Leave it to application preference.

My bet is that my system is probably just using less resources in the background. I'm on Windows 2000 professional, and I've configured, tweaked, and whittled this OS install down to the bare bones minimum, and then employ several more tricks when running software to ensure it gets my systems full attention.

EDIT: Oh, system specs:

AMD Athlon XP 1900+
512 MB PNY PC2100
GeForce 4 Ti 4400

Everything at stock.

EDIT 2: When I built this system two years ago, I told all my friends that it would be playing Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 at 800x600 with medium detail, minimum. They all thought I was nuts. Ah, sweet sweet revenge. After seeing the benchmarks, I have no reason not to believe Half-Life 2 will run similarly to Doom 3 on this machine, and I have no plans to upgrade until after the Doom3/HL2 barrier.

I don't consider to have gotten my money's worth out of a machine unless it lasts me at LEAST 2.5 years, and I prefer 3.

Did you miss the whole debacle with that one jackoff who kept posting about his "OMG JETWAY FX5200 128MB" in every god damn thread and proclaiming it the King of Video Cards? 😛 I remember you flaming him for it, though it's kinda fuzzy. 😛

And oh yeah, my R9500P > Your FX5800U @ teh Doom3. 😉

Edit - I r teh gud spieler. 😛

No, I was just curious as to why his frames seem somewhat low; my system is a 3200+ with a gig of RAM, I know exactly why my frames are so terrible (playing at 10x7 medium quality with AF/trilinear enabled doesn't do much for me either, the NV2x's are terrible with AF).

Processor is my weak point. At the time, it was about the fastest available (AXP 2200+ was the king of the hill when I built the system, and PC2700 was brand new on the block...), but top end video cards are always ahead of top end CPUs these days. Almost all my benchmarks are CPU limited.
