Rollerblading in NYC

I'm planning on rollerblading in Central Park, but not sure if I can rollerblade to get there. Are you allowed to rollerblade on the sidewalks and/or streets in Manhattan?

Where do you live?

edit: I live in lower manhattan so I usually bike on the bike path along the west side highway and cut 3-4 blocks across town once I get uptown. I regularly see people rollerblading on the path as well(and hogging the entire lane might I add with their big strides... pisses me off) and I see them cut across town as well.

Not sure about the rules with rollerblades on sidewalks though. My guess is that it's allowed since you're not really going that fast and have more control than a bike.

I'm from Texas, so I have no idea on the laws in NYC. I'm actually not sure of the rules where I'm from, but they are probably rarely enforced. NYC has a lot of cops, so I got to make sure I follow the rules.

I regularly rollerblade on campus around lots of people, so I should be pretty safe around pedestrians. I don't really want to go on the road and get ran over by a taxi. What's the worse a cop will do? Just tell me to get off the sidewalk?

Rolleblade is a company and trademark

They're called inline skates, dammit.
<-- used to skate

I can say for certain rollerblading on the streets of NYC is not a good idea so stay with the sidewalk, I'm sure you're ok. I've biked on sidewalks myself when streets are too dangerous, I just go slower, that or I dismount and walk.

I have Rollerblades.

Rollerblading is easier to say then inline skating or skating (most people think skateboarding).

Well I like to rollerblade with my first-gen Oxygens that are like 15 years old. I don't really care about trademarks.

When I say I want a coke, it means I want a Pepsi brand coke.

If a trademark is easier to say, who's gonna stop me?

Go find the chicks.

Once October hits they will be covering up again.

Inline skating is a great way to meet chicks. Especially one's that need help.

First thing I did with my current lady friend. Great thing to do especially when the girl isn't good at inline skating and has to hold onto to you a lot.

It's illegal to skate, inline skate, scooter, bike, or any of the sort on NYC sidewalks and subways. I've been inline skating 😛 since i was probably 10 and i'm now 26 and i've always gone on the sidewalk and subways without issue. Well there was this one time that this female cop with a stick up her ass asked me to take my skates off on a subway platform once and i refused so she threatened to fine me $60, but she just let go after bitching at me for a bit, think i was 17 at the time. So unless you find a cop that's really bored or has a stick up their ass, no one is going to bother you about skating, but they will definitely give you a ticket if you're on a bike, that really bothers them for some reason heh.

I actually use K2s for recreation and Missions for hockey. I think my sisters have Rollerblade brand skates.

Thanks for the info Ciber.

Not really. It has only diluted the Rollerblade brand name and trademark. Just like Xerox which has spent millions to preserve their brand name.

People will say Rollerblade or Rollblading and not even think about the company.

I see people rollerblading on the sidewalk almost every day, but usually only early in morning (before 8).

It's been known as rollerblading for quite some time.

It's like asking for a kleenex. Nobody says "please hand me the facial tissue"

Doesn't matter if you've got kleenex brand or puffs or target brand or whatever, people call it all kleenex.

I hear few people call it kleenex - usually just "a tissue" here.

Yeah. I see it regardless since I live near Union Square, though.

According to NYCSK8, skating on sidewalks has not been banned, but there is a reckless skating law.
http://www.skatecity.com/nyc/law/
The reckless skating law was a compromise version of a proposal which originally included a ban on skating on the sidewalks by any person over age 14. Happily for skaters, that provision was removed. Nevertheless, city and state politicians have been known to advocate such a ban, including laws proposed in the state legislature. Skaters are thus enouraged to keep their heads screwed on and to skate no faster than a walking pace while on the sidewalk, lest there be an incident which would provide fuel for hostile politicians.
