I'll wait until November, when I'm planning to build myself a new PC. Then we'll see.

Niiiiice. I'm an acoustic player myself. What's your axe of choice?

I play a Jackson King V :D

Hahahah noice...

Call me when you need your 200mg ibuprofen 2T PO Q4-6 for Vista Headache.

Once I have everything, I'll set up my Vista Business. Rite now I have a Win98, WinME, NT, Win2k and XP. Just couldn't bring myself to get rid of any of them.

I won't be buying Vista until an absolute must have directx 10 game comes out. personally, I don't see the point of getting it unless it does something that XP doesn't, and for me that something would have to be dx10. Plus I don't want to be Microsoft's guinea pig for their new OS. One thing that annoys me about Vista is how much they're touting the Aero interface. Seriously, I would probably use it for a couple of minutes just to see what it's like, then throw it into classic mode, same as with XP; that green/blue color scheme was too toyish for my taste. Besides, why would I want to waste precious computational cycles on an interface that I don't even care about? Great, just slow down my computer more, please!

On a similar note, does Vista Home Basic support DX10? I mean, everyone's saying it's crippled and stuff, but I don't care about the new "interface" and such so as far as the functional level features goes, is Vista Home Basic really lacking? If not I'll just buy that when I need to and save some $ (unless they sell ultimate or whatever at school).

At least you are honest about your three reasons, especially the third one :)

Vista Basic, does support DX10. FYI, you will not lose any "computational cycles" by going Home Premium, Business, or Ultimate as Aero uses your idle video card for effects, not your CPU. Also, when you run a full screen application that requires 3D acceleration, Aero is automatically disabled.

You're welcome OP.

Running Vista Ult. 64... no issues yet whatsoever.

New system:

E4300 clocked to 2.4/1066 w/ Tuniq Tower
P5B deluxe
8800 GTS
2 x 1 GB mem.
320GB Samsung HDD
P180b Antec case
Corsair HX620 power supply

I was not going to enjoy installing XP on an SATA drive so I decide to take the dive into Vista instead.

Only drivers I had to load myself were the graphics and sound drivers. I did also update the chipset driver but that is it. Install was faster and easier than any XP install I have ever done.

All my software works fine. The DX9 and older games I play (FarCry, Pirates, etc.) all work fine and run great (with one small map loading issue in FarCry).

Betas/alphas of some DX10 games I've loaded up are swweeett!;) Yeah... I wish.

I'm probably going to stick with XP/linux - no point in me "upgrading" to Vista when I don't have a great PC to begin with...

I've been using Vista for months. I got my issues sorted out long ago and now I'm the one sitting back using my new OS while everyone whines about how *I* am not working fine. It's funny, the ones bitching about Vista the most are the ones that aren't even running it.

I've gotten used to it now and going back to an old circa 2002 XP box is annoying to me. XP feels like NT now.

Now that it's released I'll work with Vista on a test lab box, but I won't even consider going production with it until at least after SP1.

For businesses it is definitely a risk to use Vista right now because everyone knows the OS was rushed out the door so MS could book the revenue.

Then why come into a Vista thread?

Because, if you followed the OP, this didn't start out as a Vista praise fest only, it was about how some people are being cautious on upgrading, and for good reason. My reasons are more complex than just that some of my hardware would (for now) be worthless. I'm really happy that so many people think Vista is all the cheese, but I'm not so sure.... That is what this thread was about.

I don't think I am ready for Vista even though Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor says that my system will work with Vista Ulitmate only if I have to give up two devices - Intel HaM v92 data/fax/voice modem and ATI Wonder VE tv tuner card. I check for device driver from ATI and Intel websites they aren't going to make drivers for Vista. :(

Good to know about DX10, after all everyone's saying how crippled basic is; as long as it supports DX10 it's Vista enough in my book. As far as the computational cycles thing, I guess I should have been more descriptive. I'm using an X1900GT and trying to get F@H to run on it, so my video card wouldn't be idle. That's good to know about Aero being disabled on games though.

Not a *single* one. Other than having to use it at work, they can stick this version of Windows up their arse.

Today is Patch Tuesday, so I fired up my Windows XP installation to patch it. It needs eight Critical updates for security issues. Some of those updates cover multiple vulnerabilties, too. This, in the "mature" OS that's two years into its current Service Pack, and about halfway through its overall lifespan.

My Vista installation, by contrast, needed zero security updates this month. It's unaffected by the issues that are rated Critical on WinXP, as you can see for yourself if you read the security bulletins. This, in the supposedly wet-behind-the-ears OS that people don't want to use until it hits SP1.

Who's sitting pretty now, eh? ;)

Things I don't like about Vista GUI:

- No animation for maximizing/restoring windows
- No glass effect for maximized unless you do some hex editing tweak
- The default UI font (Segoe UI) is cleartype and looks bad on certain monitors (okay on my laptop, REALLY BAD on my desktop LCD)

-it animates just fine.

-by design. transluscent windows give you a view of what's under when there are multiple windows on the screen. When you maximize it would only be a distraction since you can't reach those windows anyway.

-change the font if you want or disable cleartype. kinda sounds like your desktop LCD is low end :(

You can always flip back to classic if you want.

Ditto. :) Running a Standard account mostly. I didn't attempt to install any beta drivers, I just used what Vista comes with.

Comment:

UAC has been a source of bleating from people who (for some reason) want their Vista to behave like a glorified Windows98, but I think it's a feature whose time has come. Having used the low-rights approach on WinXP Pro and Win2000, I find Vista makes it easier. Give it a chance, people... it's like seatbelts in your car. You might have to fasten them 5,000 times before they save you from serious harm one day. Don't disable UAC lightly.

UAC is designed for people who don't follow common sence when working with the computer. UAC is an un-needed layer for people that use their computer properly, keep their AV up to date, and practice proper security protocols. I've never run a resident anti-spyware program. No need to.

Really?

So when starforce installed on XP along with your game or the sony DRM "rootkit" you stopped that with "best practices"?

I'd say disable UAC until you get all your drivers loaded and all your main software reinstalled. That said, both my laptop and desktop both have unsupported devices that are in perfect working order, so my copy of Vista Home Premium is staying on the shelf. I may do a dual-boot with the 64bit version (once my media arrives), but I'd really like to completely switch to Vista and be able to sell my copy of WinXP Pro. I had to get a full version of Home Premium since there is no upgrade path from XP Pro to Home Premium, which BTW is completely retarded. The only thing more retarded is the $260 sticker price on the Ultimate Upgrade version.

P.S. The only reason I give a rats ass about Vista is because of games. If WinXP Pro had DX10 support, I wouldn't even give Vista the time of day.
