Can someone give me some good suggestions for my intro into RPGs? I prefer not to pay monthly subscriptions. (I heard some have it)

thanks,

Baldurs` Gate2,Planescape Torment,I also liked the Might & Magic 6,7,8 games even though the graphics are pretty poor.

I would reccommend Baldur's Gate or BG II. Torment isnt a good starter game IMO. Stay away from Diablo if you want a more classic roleplaying experience. Nothing compares to the tabletop experience (High, a gallon of Mountain Dew running through your veins, with pizza sauce dribbling off your lip at 5 in the morning ;) )

Any Black Isle/Bioware game will do fine as a start. They kinda rule the RPG scene at the moment.

What about Ultima Online? It is getting even better now that Third Dawn is coming out. Pure roleplaying at its best IMHO.

Don't go with Altima Online.... If ya want a online RPG wait a little while for Neverwinter Nights to be released. Its made by the same company as Baldursgate Icewinddale and Torment... And it wil be available for PC Linux and Macs..

If you are just starting, the simpler the better.
The D&D games can get complex with multiple side quests, etc., except for Icewind Dale which is, as said, fairly linear.

My wife eased her way into RPG's with Might & Magic 6 (the better of the latest 3, IMHO).

If you have any consoles, some console RPG's might be a good place to start as well. Final Fantasy IX is fairly easy to learn, but is addicting and fun.

Hope this helps. =)

PS - Icewind Dale has an expansion coming out next month as well. =D

Baldur's Gate (I and II are good for the D&D stuff), Fallout 1 and 2, Diablo 2 (if you like that hack and slash *clickclickclickclick* action), Icewind Dale looks pretty good although I've not tried it (the gameplay is similar to BG - D&D). Also, look for the following games when they come out: Arcanum and Neverwinter Nights.

You can find Fallout 1 and Baldur's gate 1 in stores at a cheap price. Start with one of these. If you get hooked you have a lot of similar games to continue on with

for an intro to rpgs, go for diablo 2. while it is an rpg, it is very simple, and there is no risk of getting confused in a whole heap of stats/items/powerups/etc like some of the more in depth rpgs.
