Blago's revenge: appoint a highly qualified candidate to the open Senate seat, knowing that the Senate will refuse to seat him.

I am just now watching the press conference from earlier today and it's just bizarre on so many levels.

Did Bobby Rush have a stroke or something or is that just a speech impediment he was born with?

And perfectly fits the quota in Senate! Affirmative action in Congress! I guess it's a step forward in a Democratic point of view!

Typical Republican idiocy, thinking quotas are just for fun and completely failing to comprened the concept of the wrongs done for centures still hurting people now, the current effects of past discrimination that leave large groups of people severly disadvantaged and the justice in taking some small partial corrective action against those past wrongs' current effects.

no, the ears just weigh down his face, causing his lips to droop which gives the appearance of an impediment

on a serious note, I didn't think anyone would be stupid enough to accept a blogo nom. Guess I was wrong.

It's from too many drugs while he was a Black Panther. Only the Best criminals get to be high-falootin politicians in/from Chicago.

Yea look at all these crimes he did while a BP...

"While a Black Panther, he operated Free Breakfast for Children program. He also coordinated the pioneering Free Medical Clinic, which developed the nation's first mass sickle cell disease testing program."

the man should be shot for that mess, how dare he.

In fairness he was apparently the Panthers' "Deputy Minister of Defense," and served six months in jail on a weapons charge, in addition to going AWOL from the Army. I was just startled by his poor and, IMO, strange presentation at that press conference.

This is just another example of Obama's deft statesmanship IMO - he could certainly (as Rush is doing) apply pressure to the Senate Democratic Caucus to seat Burris, at least in part because Burris is black, but instead he recognizes that no Blagojevich appointment will be perceived as legitimate so he is blocking it. I say kudos to him and the Democrats in the Senate (a group I am not accustomed to praising).

i love his choice of wording on trying to block burris. nothing like turning this into a race issue.

I wouldn't single this out as a good example of Obama's political skill (which he surely has). Not pressuring his own party into seating someone appointed by the most hated governor in the history of his political home state whom his own party is hip deep in trying to impeach is pretty much a given.

Yeah, because using discrimination to "right" previous discrimination makes so much sense. Sheesh.

I agree with Common Courtesy who says, " With Obama weighing in, it looks like the seat will remain vacant until Ill can hold a special election or a different governor selects an appointee. "

My other take is that Blago over reached himself, and has basically made a fast tracking an impeachment the way forward.

I doubt a special election, but letting a committee of dems select the nominee and having Blago rubber stamp that might be another way to resolve the impasse.

But what Blago did is extremely disrespectful and in denial of reality, there will be a backfire price to pay.

Had he been nominated after blago got sacked, he'd have no problem becoming a senator.

I think it is Blago's way of saying FU to the Democratic establishment (state and national). Burris, from all appearances, is a harmless old hack who probably doesn't have a chance of being elected to the senate on his own (he couldn't do it before even without the Blago taint). I think Blago did this appointment purely out of spite, to cause as much mischief and damage as possible. Since he wasn't going to personally benefit from the appointment he wants to screw his perceived enemies as much as he can.

Burris is a tool for accepting the nomination. Not tainted by Blagojevich my ass. You accept the taint by accepting the nomination. The right thing to do would have been to politely decline.

I have a certain respect for Blagojevich.. for as much of a corrupt scumbag as he is, he is damned good at being a corrupt scumbag. I'm not sure he could have pulled off a more perfect move.

Hey, we don't do things half-assed here in Illnois. When we elect a scumbag politician we elect the scummiest little shit there is.

God, I still can't believe he made an appointment, even worse Burris accepted it. It's like they're living in another dimension.

No no no and a thousand times no, Burris has now proved he is a fool, and as such, not worthy of being the next Illinois Senator.

Everyone in Illinois, from Obama on down conceded that Burris could have been a worthy choice as a "fine man" The only real Burris taint lay in the fact that Blago used him some what shamelessly, but when the clueless idiot named Barris joined the Blago conspiracy and over reaches, he self disqualifies himself as someone to be considered when the dust settles.

The only thing idiotic is placing affirmative action on an elected position! Why even elect when there is quota in place? Sure this is a special case, but race, religion or sex should never be the basis for one's selection! But because this is a democrat seat, then I guess it's OK to base it on anything except qualification! Past discrimination? Both GOP and Dems where in place during those times and the present. So you can't just point to GOP's when it comes to past and present bigotry.

Is the simple point that Jiggz set up a straw man and now knocks it down. Dragging in the specter of racial quotas, Illinois affirmative action, and every crass motivation the GOP can smaanfactrur

we have a great history of electing the most corrupt scumbags ever! though Blago really tops the cake. but damn it was a great move wasen't it? now he is going to have people fighting over him because he is black. then you have the one black guy saying "don't lynch him" LOL yeah what a story.

kinda intersting to see how it plays out.

Blago could nominate Mother Theresa and it wouldn't go through. I predict the race card to be played in short order though.

EDIT: looks like Bobby Rush played it. that was quick.

I expect the distinguished Reverend Jesse Jackson to tell us how "deplorable" this would be to reject Burris' rightly appointed duty to serve the people of Illinois...

Except that his kid is in the running for the seat.

His kid has more taint than Burris. Also, The Good Reverend knows that trying to promote his own son would be deplorable. Promoting his own race, OTOH, is an easier pill to swallow.

I also wanted to add that I find it amusing how people like Bobby Rush can get so upset that there isn't a black senator, when the reason for that is the last remaining black senator resigned to become President.
