I had the thought pop in my mind...does anyone still use this?

So I headed to the website and it is still active but doesn't look any different than 4 years ago.

The forums are all dead for about 2 years.

Memories...

I used to really be into helping people on this and TeamSound back in the day.

I was a regular poster and came close to helping out more.

I still have a copy of the last TeamSound release on my HD. I always liked it better than RW. It worked best with broadband connections.

That team and website vanished long ago. The voice com in PlanetSide was supposed to be based on TeamSound.

Its too bad that the PC arena still hasnt gotten its act together with voice chat. I'm hoping one day they'll finally be able to standardize it on seamless in game chat via bluetooth headsets running on a separate audio channel, rather than the 1-2 people with an analog headset plugged in per server or this crazy outside of game ventrilo stuff. The original xbox live still puts the best PC voice chat to shame.

agreed. very few use in game chat. They all will use ventrillo or TS or etc etc. I don't get it. Why not use the built in system? I understand the point of the others apps but it causes no one to talk at all unless you part of the "clan" for that server in most FPS.

This one one of the main reasons I like LOTR: Online so much. Alot of people used the in game voice chat and it worked well.

Very few people use it because...very few other people use it. Because its such a pain in the ass to use. Desktop and clip on mics dont work very well, so you're required to use a headset. Which makes those 5.1 speakers you have pointless because your ears are blocked, forcing you to use the attached headphones. And now you're tethered to the PC, and because its probably below your desk, you probably dont have much room to move around. The stock 360 headset is wired, but its wired to your wireless controller, so its not a big deal.

Bluetooth headsets are the answer. Wireless, most don't entirely block your ears, and they are configured by default to be an separate audio device independent of your sound card. But it wont be backwards compatible because of the way voice chat has always been tied to the same audio device as the sound playback.

But most people dont have bluetooth on their desktops. Its a mess, and I dont expect it to change for at least 5 years. It was one of the things I really loved about XBL, the way everyone talked because everyone could talk back - you'd feel like you were playing with real people, for better or for worse.

I agree with a lot of what you said, particularly about original XBL voice being better than anything on PC to date. I actually set up my rig to mimic the XBox after I saw what was possible there. At first I used 2 sound cards (Audigy 2 and onboard SoundStorm). Its much easier now as you can use sound card + USB headphone device (which is the same thing as the XBox). Many sound cards will even allow you to use both speakers + headsets simultaneously, but its more problematic from the application side.

But I don't think the problems are so simple. BT headsets won't be the answer until they have better battery life. My Plantronics 910 runs out of juice after only 4-5 hours of heavy use. You can also find single or double-ear USB headsets that accomplish the same thing as BT, just with a wire. I do agree though that a standard, good quality headset mic is really important here and one of the reasons the XBL experiences is better than the PC. There's very few things that are more annoying while gaming than someone with a shitty mic.

Much of the problem as JBT noted still lies with specific application implementations. It is possible to set up your rig like an Xbox with 2 sound devices, however, that still completely relies on the specific applications to recognize and allow you to set the devices. And that's before you even get into what voice comm software the game uses.

Newer games do allow you to choose which devices do what. As JBT stated, LOTRO is an example where you can specify which device takes voice input and which device outputs voice. Game sounds etc. default to whatever is specified via Windows. Ventrilo and TS also allow you to do this. COD4 only allows you to choose your voice input device, but all sounds, both voice and game only go through speakers.

It really comes down to specific applications allowing you to choose which sound devices do what as the device info is taken directly from Windows. TS and Vent allow you to do this by default, and have for as long as I can remember. As soon as games allow you to do this with in-game settings with good quality voice (LOTRO uses GameSpy/RW iirc) I think you'll see more people using voice chat.

Your opinion. Ventrilo, it's codec options and all of it's other features make it the premiere voice chat program. Far better than anything you have access to on Xbox. You may not like the fact that it isn't seamless across everything, but the fact is that I wouldn't have the option of high end codecs if that were the case, Ventrilo runs stand alone because the system demands that kind of performance.

I like the fact that I have access to Ventrilo and Fraps running in the background on my PC. I like that I can control who I hear from, or I can mute vent and fraps something or switch channels in Vent if I want to be broken down by a specific group of people. I like that I can be playing bloodlines and talking to someone playing HL2.

Oh and seriously... no one else here recognized iparty? Depressing.

Regarding 2 sound devices. In my WoW guild we used to have a guy who did DJ work on the side as one of our more casual members. He had 2 audio cards hooked into Ventrilo and could DJ on the fly. It was very cool because he'd be talking and then kick into some sound effects like a radio DJ (Since 1 audio card was direct raw into Ventrilo, there wasn't any sound quality degradation) . Hillarious times. PC has the power to do whatever you want, if you want to put the time into it.
