i don't get it.

the mural is continually tagged by various other artists in a perpetual ritual of defacing.

wtf is the problem?

if this is actually true then fuck Roger Waters.

I already have very little respect for him but this is too fucking far if it's real.

Am I missing something?

It's a taped on piece of paper... is it not?
How is that defacing anything?

If it's tagged on the wall, as in paint, made to look like paper, that's different. But I'm guessing it's paper.

Roger Waters is kind of a douchebag, but this is just crying over nothing imho.

I just gave it even more of a closer look, I'm not buying it.

Hell, if that's paint, I'm extremely impressed. Part of the lower-right corner looks like it's bent, coming off the surface.

There's an obvious section of paint behind the piece the quote is on, that looks painted on, and kind of looks like a piece of paper. But they look distinct, and appears there is painted art underneath this piece of paper taped on.

Also, that soldier appears to also be paper placed on the mural, meant to go along with the quote (obvious it is meant to appear alongside the quote). If that's paint, that's some serious effort and skill.

so it must be a personal thing regarding Smith....b/c at the article states, tons of other artists deface the mural regularly with their own tags.

what's the big deal?

also, it says that waters hired a team of people to do this all over the world. could easily have been a local decision. I'm sure he isn't going to micromanage these things.

Believe me, I understand perspective techniques.
I'm arguing this is breaking those bounds. A good eye can still spot the falsehoods in perspective techniques. I cannot guarantee that is not paint, because obviously I am working with utter shit for photos.

But I'm 99% positive it is not painted. If someone painted that, all of that (including the soldier), and included the ripples on the piece of paper that looks taped/glued onto the mural, then someone spent a significant amount of time making this look perfect. That wouldn't be something you knock out in 10 minutes.

it is definitely paper on the wall. you can even see the shadows the edges cast.

To play devil's advocate and state something anyone arguing it is paint will surely say...
shadows are easy to falsify with ink.

:p

But not in this case. It's paper. End of story.

Defacing not found.

Regardless of the method, I think it's in pretty fucking poor taste to deface a memorial to a fellow musician, regardless of who else decided to deface it.

On top of that, to deface it with some bullshit faux political tripe to advertise a fucking cash grab of a tour is even more ridiculous

Oh I know. I love all that sidewalk art. There are some serious skills to be found in artists who employ perspective techniques.

Roger Waters Paid Street Artists to Deface Elliott Smith Memorial Mural
Waters playing the game with the bravery of being out of range, eh? Bam.

I don't give a shit. I have no idea who this Elliot Smith is, I don't give two fucks about his shitty wall and I don't give a shit if Waters is a huge wanker in real life - his albums kick ass, that's all that I care about with my musicians.

Umm.. guys...
It's street painting. And Elliott Smith probably would have thought this neat. I don't think it was intended as defacing.

The article states that Waters hired a PR firm who subsequently hired some wage slaves to paste this photocopied Banksy knockoff posing as street art all over the world.

Elliot Smith didn't even last 5 years as a famous musician before succumbing to heroin/depression/suicide. Toward the end, Smith would nod off in the middle of one of his whiny songs when trying to play live. I do have to give Smith some style points though for his poetic exit (stabbed his own heart with a knife). Roger Waters is pushing what 70 now? For all I care he can exhume Smith's corpse and piss on it.
