Why go through all the trouble and expense of converting the bus to corvair power you ask ?
Because I can !
Seriously,the gains in performance,reliability and peace of mind knowing that you can accelerate onto a busy highway without getting creamed by a tractor trailer is reason enough for me.
As an added benefit,when cruising on the highway the noise level is greatly
reduced because the corvair powertrain
spins much slower than the stock VW does.

I did a custom air shock conversion

Negative, I didn't want a meltdown, as it stands, cylinder head temps reach 500 F on a 100 degree day fully loaded, a turbo 'vair reaches 575 F in a 2,900 lb. corvair, in the bus it would go well past that.
I originally considered a 4 carb 140 HP big valve 'vair engine but they are known for dropping valve seats under heavy loads so I stuck with the small valve two carb 110 HP version.

The Bus is still considered slow by todays standards.

Original engine and tranny = 0-60, 39.5 seconds fully loaded. <--- 50 hp :wine:

1966 110 HP and 4 speed tranny with 3.55 rear end gears = 0-60, 12.9 seconds fully loaded.


Not seen in those pics, a 13 color TV/VCR combo mounted onto the top of the sink, and a custom fabricated heaterbox mounted under the rear seat.

The reason I went with the Corvair engine (air cooled) was because I did not want a radiator to spoil the looks of the front of the bus.

Wow. That is one mother of a cattle guard. I've seen them before, but I never paid attention to how the radiator was mounted. But none were like that.

 

None of the split window or Baywindow Buses came from the factory with water cooling, VW went the water route in late '82/ early '83 with the Vanagon to try to gain more horses and to comply with ever stricter emission regulations, eventually they stuffed VR6's into the Eurovans, but I do not consider these true VW buses because they are front wheel drive.
