Would all you good Republicans stand behind such a nomination? I know it is easy to support GWB when his puppeteers make decent choices about his cabinet...but what would you do if someone like this is placed in a position of power?

In other words, how deep does your loyalty go?

If he names Sonic the Hedgehog as the Director of the EPA (GWB spends enough time with Sonic, why not), are you going to support him?

Typing,

You are quite the liberal attack dog. If GWB nominated Jesse Jackson to the Supreme Court, you'd probably find some reason to attack him on that as well.

You would be well advised to choose your battles carefully. Fighting on every single issue just makes you look petty and spiteful. But hey, if the shoe fits... :D

By the way, do you have a reason not to like Roger? Do you know anything about him besides his illustrious career in the NFL? He is very well respected outside of football as well. Perhaps you should
do a little research.

Also, I'd like to hear your suggestions for Sec. of the Navy and why.

It was meant to be sarcastic. And caustic. But the question remains the same. It is easy to talk about Colin and Condoleeza, but are you going to give the same response to EVERY appointee, no matter what the qualifications they bring to the job? Just asking how honest you might be....

I would like to see McCain as Sec. Of Navy.

In fact, I would like to see GWB elect a LOT of Senators to posts in his Administration. Preferebly from states with Democratic Governors.

Here's my stance.

I'm going to give the people nominated a chance to do a good job. If they don't, then Bush needs to ask for their resignation. However, as long as he chooses qualified people (and there are many, many qualified people), I'm not going to criticize just to be doing something. Unfortunately, our entire country is not made up of Colin Powells.

After Clinton brough Ms. Elders with him, Mickey Mouse as Secretary of the Navy would be a first class appointment.

Whats wrong with Larry Elders? ;) I thought Jocelyn Elders had the right messege, just the wrong country, the US is not ready for such advanced things as Sexual Responsability, Birth Control and Masterbation.

I am sure the liberals of the board will find something to complain about no matter who Pres. Elect Bush picks. Look to the other threads for examples.

If Bush nominated Jesse Jackson for any public post, I would say that was a bad decision.

Personally, I don't find McCain that outstanding as a politician. His campaign finance reform bill is so riddled with loop holes that it makes me wonder about his abilities.

Staubach would be a good choice for the Navy Secretary job. Successful businessman......... Heisman Trophy Winner...... Couple of Super Bowl Rings....... Great motivator.

McCain would be a good one too.

Well since Staubach hasn't been nominated for that job it is academic isn't it? Your grasping if you have to pose what if's to find things to critisize.

<< You are quite the liberal attack dog. If GWB nominated Jesse Jackson to the Supreme Court, you'd probably find some reason to attack him on that as well. >>

Jesse Jackson is liberal too, so that analogy is moot.

burnedout,

Hey, Chris Weinke is a Heisman Tropy Winner, has a national championship ring (maybe 2 after this year?), is a great motivator, and did fairly well money-wise in baseball- should we make him the Secretary of the Navy?

Roger Staubach went to the Naval Academy and played football there, then he served his mandatory 4 years and got the hell out to play in the NFL- I doubt he could even remember specific jobs and their duties in the navy nowadays.

Talk about an abuse of the spoils system- which was supposed to be, for the most part, gone.

zippy,

Did you hear the whizzing sound as my point flew over your head or was it too high for you to hear?

Do you have any idea what Staubach has done in the private sector? Of course not.

If you are too stupid to follow basic logic, why don't you shut the hell up.

I guess I'll spell it out for you, zippy. I'd hate for you to end up confused.

GWB nominates person X. All Liberals whine for some reason.

GWB nominates staunch liberal Jackson. All Liberals whine again for some reason.

WHY? NOT BECAUSE HE NOMINATED A LIBERAL, BUT BECAUSE THEY WANT TO WHINE. WHY DO THEY WANT TO WHINE? BECAUSE THEIR MAN IS NOT THE ONE MAKING THE APPOINTMENTS.

It's called sour grapes, you moron. :|

Who's the whiner? Try anger management therapy.

Anyway, I couldn't give a rats left nut how well someone on Bush's cabinet has done in the private sector, if they aren't qualified for the job, they shouldn't get the job. This is not for becoming chairman of the reserve or something- this is being one of the top officials of the navy.

I have no problems with Condaleeza and I think that his selection of Powell was excellent.

Also, the Republicans have been the whiners for the last 8 years, so get off my (well, Democrats as a whole) case about that whole whining deal.

I get it. Foolish me. I didn't realize one had to be a bureacrat to be qualified for Sec. of the Navy.

It might come as a shock to you to realize that succeeding in the private sector is actually quite difficult. It may even prove one to be more qualified than some Navy hack who has been kissing brass ass for 25 years.

I guess you finally got my point, although I see you also tried to change the subject. Feel pretty stupid, huh?

You said, "You are quite the liberal attack dog. If GWB nominated Jesse Jackson to the Supreme Court, you'd probably find some reason to attack him on that as well," with no smilies, with nothing- it is difficult to express sarcasm on the net. I just thought you were a dense, uninformed Republican, which you have only proved to me.

<< I get it. Foolish me. I didn't realize one had to be a bureacrat to be qualified for Sec. of the Navy. >>

The Navy is part of our military. Do you grasp that? This is like making my father a 5 star General in the Army- well, hey, he served for 3 years, has done well in the private sector- why not?

<< It may even prove one to be more qualified than some Navy hack who has been kissing brass ass for 25 years. >>

Republicans "kiss brass ass" so well though, just look at Bush! He got military votes by making crap up about our armed forces. Truth is, only 1 unit was unable to deploy in Dec. 1999 (or was it 1998?) and that was taken care of in 2 weeks. About 2 months ago I saw an interview with someone actually IN the army who said that.

<< I guess you finally got my point, although I see you also tried to change the subject. Feel pretty stupid, huh? >>

No, not really. You are the one making yourself out to be an ass. I wasn't changing the subject, I was shooting this down:

<< GWB nominates person X.

BECAUSE THEIR MAN IS NOT THE ONE MAKING THE APPOINTMENTS.
>>

with this, "I have no problems with Condaleeza and I think that his selection of Powell was excellent." Basically proving you wrong that Democrats will hate anyone in the cabinet regardless of their qualifications and service.
And I was shooting this down:

<< BUT BECAUSE THEY WANT TO WHINE.

It's called sour grapes, you moron. :|
>>

With this, "Also, the Republicans have been the whiners for the last 8 years, so get off my (well, Democrats as a whole) case about that whole whining deal." Well, actually, I didn't show you to be a moron on that one, more of a hypocrite.

Although Secretary of the Navy is a very political post, one can think of many better candidates than a retired Texas Cowboy, Republican contributor, minor league businessman. Other than his brief stint in the Navy about 20 years ago, he probably knows nothing about military issues.

Guys like Brent Scowcroft come to mind as the kind of person one would expect to put in such a position.

What does he know about ships, staffing, military deployment, morale, and many other Navy Department issues?

We'll have to see how he does, but at first blush this is a major mistake. I also wonder how he'll do in Washington. He may not like it much. The atmosphere is very different from the business and sports world. My guess is he doesn't last but two years.

I would have picked Lou "The Toe" Groza, but he died about two months ago.

Red:

How I envision you saying "Homer Simpson for Attorney General" is what is so funny. Frankly, I always attach a persona to a quote. I flesh out the person based upon what they've written. You'd have to be inside my head, which would be a very miserable time for Red. :p

Anyway, I may be old, but I did run 5 miles hard today. And don't you forget it you musty old bag of cow, er potato chips.

In the spirit of generosity so common this time of year, I would like to announce for your listening pleasure that several news sources have floated Staubach's name for the Sec.Nav. nomination. Now go see if you can find them troll, er, my esteemed colleague.
