Roger Goodell proposes eliminating kick offs in the NFL.

i'm gonna pull out a number from completely within my ass, but I'd estimate that converting on 4th and 15th is roughly 567x more likely than converting an onside kick.
Yep, converting that is MUCH more likely than recovering an on side kick.

Also, no to this change.

Someone need to kick Goodell in his vagina so he won't procreate. This is absolutely the most retarded thing I've ever read.

Just the premise of eliminating the kick off in lieu of a punt... Which wise and beautiful woman thought of this retarded shit?

After a touchdown or made field goal, Gregory writes, a team that would have previously been kicking off would instead get the ball at its own 30-yard line, facing fourth and 15. The team can either punt or attempt to pick up a first down and keep the ball. This proposal has reportedly been promoted by Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano

WTF.

get rid of the stupid extra point (not the field goal*)and replace it with the 2 point conversion...

*defined because some idiots on here don't know the difference.

I'm an idiot so someone please explain this to me:
The idea would be to remove completely the high-speed, open-field collisions between large men who dip their heads instinctively at impact and place extra pressure on the C3-C4 area of the spine. While other injuries would be possible during the punt play that replaces the kickoff, the risk of catastrophic injury would be reduced.

Edit: I guess I should've Googled some...

Why not just have the two opposing team captains line up 5yards apart at the 50 yard line wearing pink or blue tutus, & have a coin toss. Who ever wins the flip wins the game, it's then over and everyone can go home safely without risking injury. Goodel would surely approve of that.

Not to be outdone, Bud Selig immediately proposed eliminating bats from baseball, while David Stern came out with his own edict requiring LeBron James to play for every team as a way to raise TV ratings. Gary Bettman just nodded and smiled in the background, content in the knowledge that simply eliminating all the players from the NHL still ranks as the biggest commissioner dick move of the year.

I'm missing something. The idea is to reduce injuries on kickoffs, but the solution is to basically have the team punt instead? Would punts result in fewer injuries? In my mind punts and kickoffs are not that different as far as the action.

If punt returns indeed have fewer injuries, then just have the scoring team punt from their own 40. I'm tired of seeing kickoffs sail through the end zone anyway. But not having an onside kick option I think is a problem.

The scoring team getting the ball on their 30 4th-and-15 idea is a non-starter with me. Perhaps that's the workaround to the onside kick issue, but it's not a good one.
Punting situations are safer because it's not 11 vs 11 heading full steam into each other. The "onside kick" would be the 15+ yard pass.

I think it's a dumb idea, but it would make for safer exchange of possessions after a scoring play.

WTF? Go back to Australia or wherever else that lame sport is cared about

American football > * except hockey
LMAO! There're many sports that are better than American football. We also don't have to watch ads during the game. 😀

If they were absolutely serious about replacing a kickoff, then just make everything a touchback and start at your own 20 and call it a day. This 4th & 15 proposal after a made FG or TD makes zero sense.

This makes the most sense. In essence they are already doing it, because when they moved up the point where they kick off, all kickers can reach the middle to end of the endzone. Its actually surprising when someone runs it these days.

I would go the other way, and replace the helmets with leather ones, or removed them all together. The helmets give them a false sense of security, so they take risks they wouldnt if they didnt have a helmet. People wouldnt torpedo with the head and start to make proper tackles.

I guess while we are at it we should remove seat belts from cars, warning labels from poison and insist hunters wear deer colored attire😱

I find it ironic this is coming from the one coach who orders his defensive line to go after the QB when they've clearly lost.

Um, Schiano has seen firsthand the devastation of kickoffs.

Schiano's gesture is the type of classy move we don't often see in professional sports, in which business often trumps sentiment. LeGrand's story should be sad, but his positivity throughout his ordeal has inspired so many.

We applaud Schiano and the Buccaneers for such an inspired idea.

Sure. If there were no airbags, seat belts, and traction control, most people would drive slower. And if you thought your child might drink poison, you wouldnt have it accesible to just anyone, or you wouldnt have it at all. Maybe I missed the study where warning labels were an effective deterrent to children. All those words saying this and that...a skull and cross bones conveys the same message universally. And as far as hunters go, f em. They hide in bushes and shoot at unaware animals. Now, if they are also being hunted my men at the same time, well, now thats a mans sport. You chose to do it, more power to ya. Just dont cry when you get shot.

Here is my idea have one guy stand at the 50 yard line. At the end zone release a lion if the guy can get to the other end zone they score a touchdown. If the player get eaten by the lion then spot the ball there. It also should be easy to spot the ball because of the bloodstain on the field. It is win win for everyone because instead of 22 guys potentiality getting hurt you only have one guy ever to worry about. Also it be hell of entertaining to watch. Oh ya I predict on the coin toss they defer to have the other team receive.
