Reason number 3 he lists is the MAIN reason I don't go to the theaters. I figured it is MUCH cheaper watching it at home, rather than paying for movie tickets PLUS the bail money I'd have to come up with to get me out of jail for beat the crap of the inconsiderate a-hole behind me that insists on kicking the back of my seat, not to mention carrying on cell phone conversions (AT A NORMAL CONVERSION VOLUME) while the movie is going on.

That and I just enjoy watching movies at home. MUCH more relaxing and enjoyable to me.

Cell phones are the reason The Dark Knight was the last movie I saw in a theater. I love my phone, but would never be so inconsiderate as to use it in a dark theater where it would be extremely distracting for people who paid to actually watch the film. I counted 7 phone screens on for almost the entire run time.

Who would pay to sit in a theater and just text for almost 3 hours?

For me it was the prices. I don't want to pay $18.50 just to watch the new hyped blockbuster movie that came out and repeat this more than 2-3x a year.

I don't go that often because the projector operator doesn't seem to appreciate it when I ask him to pause the movie so I can go to the bathroom.

The audacity! :colbert:

Movies are like $15 per person plus junk food. Blu Rays are less than $30 and i don't have to sit in the theater for an hour or more waiting for the movie to start

tickest here are only like 7$ but i still dont go simply because i dont care to & movies are really not interesting enough to get me there.

Watching a movie in the thearter really does nothing for me at all. i dont even have a super HT, just a nice TV and some speakers. I generally wait untill stuff is on cable to even watch it.

when i do go i never buy food. Last movie I saw was Transformers 3 because a friend wanted to go and had free tickets. before that it was Avatar simply because a bunch of people were going to check out the 3D

I only go to the 11am show on sundays . they are $5.50 and theres usually 10-15 people in the hall. Also I am stocked up on enough fandango bucks using all the 10 for 20 deals that keep coming, so I end up paying about 4 bucks each movie.

Main reason is the movies suck nowadays.

2nd reason is one giant collection: The BS associated with going to a theater. Whether its the building itself, the screen, the seats, 15 minutes of ads (which nowadays include Coke and McDonalds), the asshole patrons, the staff, the ticket price, the food price, its all crap. Sitting at home in my brand name Lay-Z-Boy is infinitely superior. I can order a medium pizza and 2 liter of Pepsi for the same price as a bag of popcorn and "large" soda, which is mostly ice.

Ebert has always been one of my favorite critics and right or wrong, he always has some good points to consider. I also feel that movies have gotten too expensive and too annoying to watch in theaters. My brother and I went to see the new Sherlock Holmes film. Cost us $10 a ticket and some asshat in the row in front of us brought their damn baby to the movie. Why the fuck do I want to go to a theater anymore?

I agree with all points. The only time I go is when fandango had a special on groupon or google offers and it's like $4 for a movie.

I also agree with most of the points. Usually when I go to a movie in the theater, its on a weekday, mid day to avoid all the teens. That said another reason is I believe home theater is growing in popularity. There was a similar thread on AVSforums about this, and the concensus is, with an upper middle like or higher home theater, it just SOUNDS better at home. With the exception of IMAX, regular theaters cant produce the impact a home system can with a properly set up sub. You just cant get the compression at a theater. The last movie I saw in the theater was Salt. The explosions were meh. I watched it at home last week, and its quite a different experience when you can FEEL the explosions.

Thats my take anyway.

most of the theaters around here are decent enough, with reasonable ticket pricing and seating...but my overall experience is still better at home, even on my modest setup.

To be fair, what you hear in a good theater is the reference level the film makers intended. Soundtracks for home release are mixed to emphasize certain frequencies because it's what most people like. I've never been in a theater, even ones with THX logos everywhere, where the low end was as accentuated as in home theaters. I'll take tight punchy bass over a +15db rumbling.

I'll re-state what said differently. Ive never heard tight punchy bass in a theater, except in IMAX. And TBH, if a home theater sounds like +15db rumbling, its not set up up properly. As I said before, "(a) home system...with a properly set up sub". I'll agree with what you said about reference levels..although usually the only thing reference is the db, NOT the quality. Frankly, most theaters are mediocre.

It's *very* hard to adequetely pressurize 250,000 cubic feet and account for acoustic properties of that space while still being cost effective.

It is assigned seating so try to get seats 18 to 26 row M. Row M is the first row in the balcony :) seats 18 to 20 something is that little box in the middle. The kill zone.

You will hear good sound.

I would go more often if movies were worth watching.

No, 3D remakes of 20 year old Disney films are not worth watching. Neither are Transformers 5 and Saw 14.

Two weeks ago my wife and I went to see MI4. The parking was $5, the tickets were $24, the drinks and popcorn were $20 (seriously?), and we had to deal with texting idiots, a sticky floor, 30 minutes of commercials, and a 17 y/o punk kicking the back of my wife's seat (until I told him to stop or I'd tear off his leg and shove it up his ass). We paid $50 to see MI4 and be uncomfortable, annoyed, and subjected to force-fed advertising?

F*** that, we're not going back to the movies until they get their shit together, we'll just go to the opera or see a ballgame instead.

I rarely see offending cell phone use to be honest.

Main reasons for me are:
1) Tickets are expensive and when combined with food egregious
2) Movie will be on DVD in no time or stream
3) I have a decent setup at home to watch movies
The parking was $5
Damn, that is like salt on a cut.

I really wish theaters in the States would start doing assigned seating. My aunt the other day bought tickets online for her local theater. She paid a $1 convenience fee and still had to pick up the tickets at the box office and she had to show up early to get a good seat. What's the damn point? At least in Hong Kong you picked your assigned seat when you bought your tickets so that you could get a good seat ahead of time.
