Clemens. Clemens won his team World Series plenty of times with his pitching in the playoff. Maddux disappears in the playoff and gets rocked. That alone makes Clemens superior.

Clemens=Winner in regular season and Post Season
Maddux= Winner in regular season and choke artist in the playoff

I tend to agree that Clemens slightly edges out Maddux do to all the World Series and Cy Young's hes won over the years and the fact that he has to face the DH. But considering that Maddux has had to work with a significantly less powerful throwing arm, its a major achievement in terms of how many wins and strikeouts he has gotten. Maddux might be one of the best off speed pitchers ever in baseball.

Yes, they are two very differenct pitchers, but I think overall in terms of achievements, they are pretty close. It also helps Clemens that he was on some pretty good teams. Maddux was also on good teams in Atlanta, but they never seemed to get past the Yankees. Although Maddux does have a WS series.

Clemens is clearly the better pitcher right now than Maddux is and that is somewhat surprising since he is a power pitcher, and power pitchers usually decline in velocity and location in their later years. I think we should give Clemens a lot of credit for the work he has put into conditioning himself throughout the year, he is one of the hardest working players in baseball. He has a very tough routine of brute exercise and that keeps him in tip-top shape. He and Andy Pettitte (also one of my favorite pitchers) work out together and are good buddies down there in Houston.

Clemens/Clemens.

Sorry even as a Braves fan for all my life Roger Clemens is one of the best, if not the best pitcher in the majors ever...

Clemens=Winner in regular season and Post Season

Clemens = 10-7 in post season of 30 games, 3.54 era
Maddux = 11-14 in post season of 60 games, 3.14 era

Its not so clear with the numbers because Clemens has had more run support, but more % of decisions for clemens is a plus. However, neither will be remembered for being very dominant in the post-season imo.

This is a great debate tho, power vs. finesse, an intimidater vs. an artist.

Like I said already, its dumb to compare the ERA of these guys. Clemens has faced a DH much more than Maddux in those post season appearances.

Maddux will be remembered as a great control pitcher, but Clemens gets my nod as being the better player over his career... but only slightly.

A lot of Maddux's wins can be attributed to the great Braves teams of the 90's. The Red Sox weren't exactly a powerhouse for most of Clemen's career, so for him to have all those wins is a greater accomplishment.

Eeesh... too close to call I think... they were two very different types of pitchers...

I think i'd have to side with Clemens... to win back-to-back Cy Youngs on a couple of not very good Toronto teams was an accomplishment.

He won the pitcher's triple crown in each of those years with Toronto. The first one to do it in decades. Clemens got most of his wins while pitching in hitter's parks during a hitter's era. He also cut his teeth pitching in the very tough AL East for most of his career. For this reason, sports writers like Peter Gammon has called Clemens the greatest pitcher of all time.

Personally, I wouldn't rank him that high, but he's definitely amongst the top five.

And another thing. If the Astros weren't such a pathetic team this year, this old guy would be the front runner for his eighth Cy Young award. As of tonight, his team blew another win for him. Something has to be said about a 42 year old man leading the league with an astonishing 1.19 ERA and 69 Ks in 68 innings.
