My kids have this same sense of entitlement. Gawd, I hope they don't sue me!!

A New Jersey family is in court today with the teenage daughter facing off against her parents in a battle to get them to pay for her schooling and living costs even though she's 18.

Rachel Canning is suing her parents in family court in Morristown, N.J., because she says they refuse to pay for her Catholic high school education and for college in the fall.

She claims that her parents, Sean and Elizabeth Canning, kicked her out of their Lincoln Park house when she turned 18 in October, which they deny. Dad Sean Canning says she left voluntarily because she didn't want to follow their house rules concerning curfew and chores.

"Private school, new car, college education; that all comes with living under our roof," he told ABC News station WABC-TV.

His lawyer, reading from a statement before the start of this afternoon's hearing, said the Cannings "are distraught that their oldest daughter feels that litigation is a better option then living together as a family."

You may still have time. Get them summer jobs and make them pay for extra stuff they want. Best thing you could do for their long term success.

Chick is equiped to easily put herself through high school at least, she's got everything she needs...18...catholic school girls outfit...

...and if her parents end up not liking that, then they'll pay. Either way, she gets what she wants. Unless she's been hit with the ugly stick, then she's F'd...

She's 18, chose to move out because she didn't want to follow the rules and this is her retort? Um, WTH happened to "My house, My Rules?"

The judge also denied her request for attorney fees, although ruling that the parents should continue with weekly allowance and "child support" payments to their daughter.

Even more disturbing. While he didn't order them to pay for private school, mandating allowance and "child support" is appalling to me.

Article I read said she was also denied "child support".

From the article it seems the judge ruled quite appropriately that the parents had a right to set expectations on her behaviour and cited numerous issues in the previous year.

Not much she can do. Other than "shame" herself (mostly) and her parents.

Also, the lawyer (her friend's father) is a total blood sucking ambulance chaser. He knows they can't win and is just hoping to shame the family into paying up.

I am thinking the boyfriend is a black guy or something. And, she wishes to embarass her parents over it.

She is doing nothing more than abusing the legal system to get revenge. It's making her look like a total asshole.

she's mostly SOL, I'd guess.

for what it's worth, in a small-world twist, I actually know her old boss... he described her as a nice, hard-working kid. none of the articles seem to mention it, but he said that she's caught in the middle of a pretty nasty divorce and her dad wanted to move her halfway across the state in the middle of her senior year of high school.

If she can sue her parents then her parents should be able to sue her for a portion of her future personal career earnings.

Way to burn bridges with your family...

I moved out at 17 due to differences between me an my parents, but after I got older and tensions calmed down, we reconciled.

I'm not sure I see this happening here.

Um, pretty sure most scholarships are merit based, not skin color based. If whites aren't getting those, it's because we're being out-competed by Asian and Indian kids. Are we now going to simultaneously complain about the presence of race-based scholarships AND that we aren't getting our fair share of them?

I'm not sure that is ironic. While he can be amusingly far left about punishing the ultra wealthy - even though to many on the left he IS the ultra wealthy - he's not really demanding his own entitlement, so you'd have to consider it ironic if anyone on the left posted something like this. Not that I have a problem with that, but it's a pretty broad brush.

Actually I give bshole credit for being honest hoping his kids don't turn out like this.

I sure as hell hope MY kids don't turn out like this. (Or worse). I think (hope?) they'll turn out well adjusted and model citizens, but who really knows for sure? Some of it depends on how crazy the rest of the culture gets that will eventually influence your kids as much or more than parents will.

Well since I've never had a paternity test taken, I can always claim they are the postman's kids if they go off the rails. LOL!

Here's a little lesson I gave my kids when they were old enough to understand what I meant: As they were making a racket skirmishing over the TV remote, I intervened by grabbing both by their shirt collars, pinning them against a wall and told them if I got fed up enough with their misbehaving it would be the easiest thing to simply get rid of them and just make new ones that are much better looking and much more well behaved.

Worked like a charm along with waking them up at 2 AM to have them wash the dishes they "forgot" to do after dinner that evening.
