i <3 my nano but this is weird

if i turn on my computer with the nano plugged into usb2 port, my computer halts at the memory testing screen. i have 1.5gb of mem and i think it halts right at 15 or 157 of the 1572864kb (i made up the kb) display. i know its the nano cuz the second i unplug it the computer continues to boot fine. similarly if i dont have the nano plugged in at all, there is no halting. how can a usb device freeze up a computer during boot? cant be a software issue...

It's probably trying to boot off the Nano. Look in your bios, there should be an option to disable USB boot.

Maybe it's trying to boot off of the drive? I don't know that much about them, but if it acts as a drive, and you have USB legacy boot devices enabled, it's probably trying to boot off of it, and then asking "WTF, over".

why would it be trying to boot off the drive on the initial post screen. it is freezing during the memory test! it still has to display all the IDE drives, give me the option to enter setup, and then go to the next bot screen before it starts trying to boot from a device

My photo Ipod does the samething.
It doesn't matter to me though, because I never boot up with it plugged in.

It's like going to the Doc, and telling him "it hurts when I move like this."
The Doc's solution "well don't do that"

If BIOS can't find a place to boot off of, or if it doesn't know where to give control to after POST, it won't POST.

from my understanding of whats going on during a boot that makes no sense...
1. memory test
2. what devices are present? (lists IDE drives)
3. can these devices boot? (checks your CD/DVD drive for a bootable disc)

it seems that it would freeze during step 2 or 3, not during step 1. of course whats going on on screen may be different from whats going on in the background, but if i turn a computer on with no bootable devices at all, it wont give me an error until after the memory test

im glad im not the only one with the problem, and certainly im no longer booting with the nano plugged in, but sometimes i forget, and its perplexing why this is happening

What type of board do you have? I have a Abit AN8 ULTRA and if I have anything plugged into the USB when booting the system will stop about the same spot. Just a flaw in the AN8 boards. Suppose to have it fixed with the next BIOS update though.

btw, i checked my bios and i dont think it even has support for booting off a usb devices. only things i could find remotely related to it was

Enable USB Legacy support (which is clearly not related but i disabled it anyway)
and in Boot device priority it has removable devices listed first, but under the removable device list it only had the floppy drive, no mention of usb devices. just to be safe i disabled bootign from removable devices entirely as well

still hangs in the same spot (because i think its pretty clear that the post hasnt even reached the boot from device point when it freezes)

and just fyi its an HP machine with an FIC AM37 mobo i believe
