When asked what motivated this sudden move, Saddam looked off into the distance and spoke quietly.
"Allah has shown me the light," Saddam replied. "I once was lost, but now I'm found, was blind, but now I see. Allah has opened my eyes. Greed is wrong, violence is wrong, selfishness is wrong. All that matters is love. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my two loving sons who have stood by me through my ordeals and who helped to guide me to the light."
At this point the sun rose over one of his castles and Saddam became distracted. He walked over to the balcony and stared directly at the sun, apparently with no negative effects. A tear was seen to fall from the corner of his eye.
"I once watched a paper model of a bomb falling through the air. It was lightweight and was carried off by the wind. It just kept floating back and forth. I watched it for hours. Sometimes", Saddam said with his voice cracking, "sometimes, there's just so much beauty in this world. My heart, my heart, just can't take it." He fell to his knees and raised his hands in the air in supplication to a higher power.
When asked if the imminent threat of war had any assistance in his conversion, Saddam again got that faraway look in his eyes. "Is someone threatening war?" he asked in puzzlement. "I've been spending so much time praying and discovering the path to enlightenment that I haven't even been aware of the outside world. But whyever would they want to attack us?
When asked what he would do if the US did attack, Saddam spread his hands in a gesture of defeat. "I guess I'll go into the streets with my people and share their death." As the bombs fall I'll say a prayer for the Americans that their God will forgive them and love them always as mine has done for me."
