Roethlisberger out: Had appendix removed

Link

First the bike wreck now this. Good thing I haven't had my draft yet. And Chargers linebacker Steve Foley got shot outside his home by an off duty cop. WTF is going on?

he must be tough after going thru a car with his face and playing professional football in the same month.. who knows tho.

The person who wrote this article is a major dumbass. Appendicitis is appendicitis. A motorcycle collision several months ago has no bearings on this appendectomy.

From ESPN:
Roethlisberger missed four games last season because of two knee injuries, one that required surgery, and injured his right thumb late in the season. He later said he broke it, though the Steelers never have confirmed that, but he missed no playing time because of that injury.

It was not immediately known if the motorcycle accident might have caused any internal damage that subsequently resulted in the appendix attack. All of Roethlisberger's known injuries from the crash -- a broken nose, orbital bones and upper and lower jaw, damaged teeth and a concussion -- were to his head.

According to various medical journals, one cause of appendicitis can be a perforation in the appendix. Unless there is severe bleeding, an otherwise healthy patient such as Roethlisberger often is released within 24 hours of surgery and has a relatively short recovery time.

He should be fine in a couple days. The chair of neurosurgery at our hospital had his appendix taken out at 9 pm, and was rounding on his patients the next morning.

Assuming he doesnt get septic or anything.

A burst appendix is a life threatening condition, and since it burst it was not likely a laparoscopic procedure, they probably had to cut him good.

I had emergency surgery to remove my appendix when I was 15 and spent a week in the hospital and at least another week at home, I wasnt playing pro ball back then but I can tell you it was many more weeks before I felt strong enough to run and gun and get slammed into the ground by a 300 pound tackle......

depends on how the surgery went. when i had mine out they said i would be out a week then back to work. But the surgery was far worse then they expected. it was not where it was supposed to be. but it was in bellow my belly button. I have a 4-5 inch scar. Also they had to cut the abdominal muscles to get to it so yeah i was out for a few weeks heh.

Yeah; I guess hitting an SUV face-first at about 60MPH will knock a few things loose. Teeth, brains, ribs, an appendix...he'll be up and walking in a few days.

Then the idiot will get hurt during practice, develop an infection in the surgery area and die.

You read it first here.

Dug's evil cat told me so.

The report I heard was laparoscopic surgery. Laparoscopic surgery != burst appendix.

And, all the reports I've heard have also said appendicitis, NOT a burst appendix. Appendicitis is pretty much treated as an inconvenience any more; the laparoscopic surgery to remove the appendicitis is a relatively simple procedure, and recovery is very quick. It's pretty close to being an out-patient procedure; most people are released the day following surgery. According to a radio news report that I heard 20 minutes ago, he may only miss 1 week.

Maybe edit the thread title to *not* reflect a "burst" appendix?

edit: Waggy, was yours a burst appendix, or was it just from a long time ago? Most hospitals run enough diagnostic tests that they wouldn't "miss" where it was located. (normally a CT scan or something)

Exactly, please change the title to reflect what really happened, the initial report didn't even say it burst, how did you come up with such information?

only one game it seems... and their first game is against miami... what a joke.

Miami? What a joke? You realize they went on a tear at the end of last season, and then signed a pro bowl quarterback, whereas the Steelers did nothing but lose key players this offseason, right?

I would have said Pittsburgh was winning this game even before this.

But I don't think Roethlisberger had a ruptured appendix. His symptoms were very acute and he had immediate medical attention.

the city of Pittsburgh is freaking out right now I'm sure...how amusing. On the other hand, the Lions can't even get 2 of their last 4 #1 draft picks in shape, so we're not really feeling bad for anybody 😛
