Rocked my pull-up workout today

Lifer
Knocked out 12 pull-ups today, Im currently happier than a pig in shit. Less than 6 weeks ago I started off only being able to do 4. When I go in for my initial PFT next friday, I wont have to be nearly as worried as I was about the pull-up portion. The pull-ups are my achilles heal, the crunches and the run are cake, but now that Im up to 12 I feel great. 🙂

 4 me

*edit*

Hot Damn! I was able to get 18 today, only 2 more to go before I max out the test. WOOOOOO 😛

Don't pat yourself on the back just yet. My brother is 51 years old and he can do over 20 pullups.

Well my dad is an astronaut.

**edit**

I doubt your brother could knock out a sub 15 minute 3 mile though, so I guess we're even.

You do them palms facing away or palms facing towards you?

Ive been experimenting with both, but Ive been having more success with palms towards me. They allow either method for the test.

Wide grip, angled pull ups are my weakest link...I've never had great shoulders, so I'm trying to concentrate a little bit more on my traps, shoulders and lats.

Palms facing inward is easier. I can do about 5-7 more with my palms facing towards me.

If they allow either I'd say definitely go palms facing inward.

I've never heard of supinated (palms toward) being harder. They're always easier, in my experience. Of course, pull-ups are hard any way you do them, congratulations.

From what I have been hearing though is that palms away is the best if you build right for it. It utilizes more back muscles which are stronger than biceps, so once you get strong enough they say palms out is better. Thats just what Ive heard though, and since Im relatively weak as hell palms in = win 😉

Well technically they would both be chin-ups because the object is to get your chin above the bar...

What if you are using a machine? Then the object is to pull the bar below your chin. Still a chin-up? Pronated position is a pull-up and supinated position is a chin-up. They work different muscles.

What's your training regimen been like? Also, did you lose any weight during the six weeks (which would make them easier)?

If anything I gained weight, all muscle baby 😉

Typical workout day:

6:00 AM workout --

5-10 mile run
3x25 push-ups
2x60 crunches
1x1 minute bridge

4:00 PM workout --

Pull-up workout
2x60 crunches
1x1 min bridge
Light lifting (mainly lat-pull downs and arm curls)

That is my M-F workout routine. On weekends I take it easy and only do 1 workout a day, usually consisting of a 3 mile run, some crunches, and my bridge. I let the 'ol arms recover over the weekend.

Then that is a lateral pulldown.

You don't need to lose weight. Just do 3 sets of however many you can with full ROM and move up 1 or 2 reps each time. Combine that with some seated or dumbell rows.

Lol...thanks...but specifically what does "pull-up workout" encompass?

Try doing pull ups with palms toward your ears. Of course you'll need a different kind of bar, but man you'll feel them in a hurry!
