Rob a wrestler = get put to sleep

Lol

A Newark man died after a tussle with a former high school wrestler he tried to rob early Saturday, NBC New York has learned.

Law-enforcement sources told NBC*New York that 30-year-old Gian Davis approached two men near Bloomfield Avenue at about 1:15 a.m. and asked for change.

When the men said "no," he then asked to borrow a cell phone, grabbed it and tried to run off with it, sources said.

One of the men lunged to get the phone back and Davis put him in a headlock, according to sources. Then, sources say the other man, a former high school wrestler, pulled Davis off his friend and put the would-be robber in a headlock.

It was strong enough that Davis apparently choked to death, sources familiar with the investigation said.

A source said the two men called police and then stayed on the scene until authorities arrived. Davis was pronounced dead at the hospital.

A medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

Tom Fennelly, chief assistant Essex County prosecutor, would only confirm that an investigation is ongoing.

No charges have been filed against the former wrestler or his friend. Their names have not been released.

Fennelly said they are cooperating with the investigation.

Davis had prior arrests for aggravated assault and theft. He was released from his last stint in jail on July 22.

Hope he doesn't get charged

I have a question.

If you choke a person, you black out only to wake up seconds/minutes later.

But sometimes you can out right kill? Why didn't he deploy a simply black out instead?

Adrenaline and/or the guy is Lennie Small?

Actually I think blacking out is by cutting off the blood supply to the brain via choking the jugular temporarily.

And outright choking the throat for breathing = death.

Heat of the moment? The would-be-mugger was probably fighting to try to get away and the guy just kept squeezing until he stopped moving.

Unfortunate incident for everyone involved. Pay your life for a cell phone. I just hope they aren't charged.

Shouldn't have tried robbing the guys and he wouldn't have died. Lesson learned for other would-be muggers I'd hope.

We haven't seen pics of these guys, so who knows how big they are, but what crook in his right mind would attempt an attack when you are up against what I assume are two young men in reasonably decent shape?

He failed his wisdom check.

its a matter of seconds/to a minute of holding the choke longer to kill. It does not take long to do either. i suspect the theif was fighting and the guy held it tighter and tighter until he stopped moving. then held it a few seconds to make sure the guy was not faking.

Not something you see every day

Yeah, I had to re-read that a few times to understand the events. Again...trying to put a guy in a headlock when he has a friend was just a bad move. Professional thief was not a great career choice for him.

wonder what race Gian was, since whites are the majority in this country, I'll assume he was white.

Not really, in a rear naked choke for instance, the goal is to deprive/reduce the brain of blood supply. This is done with the arms around the victim's neck applying pressure to the jugular veins an caratid arteries. It is far easier and quicker to drop a person with a blood-choke than with an air-choke. A proper blood choke can drop a person in seconds as opposed to an airway choke which needs time.

If you maintain a blood choke after the victim passes out, the blood flow restriction on the brain is maintained which can lead to brain damage and death.

Yeah...again, quite a moron on his part.

ohh lol, I misread it 😳 I thought one of the friends had the robber in a headlock, and the other friend pulled him off and put him in another headlock. whoops. this makes much more sense now
