Just finished driving from Ontario to the Canadian Rockies on the trans Canada highway...my observations:

Northern Ontario takes forever to drive through but the scenery is nice
Manitoba needs to fix their part of the highway...
The Prairies are boring
No one speeds in the Prairies....was flying by people....was only passed 3 times in about 2000 km's
Banff is amazing

Nice, did you do it by yourself? I always found solo roadtrips really boring, but if you have someone awesome to go with, it can be way fun.

You can't beat driving through it as a way to really see the country and start to appreciate - much better that any other form of transport. I live near the top of Lake Superior and yes, we have a lot of rocks and trees and trees and rocks and ... water! Did you realize that the distance from Toronto ON to Winnipeg MB is virtually the same as from Toronto to Orlando in the middle of Florida?

One of my favourite trips is from Kenora, ON to Winnipeg, MB. In two hours you go from Pre-Cambrian Shield of rocky old mountains, loads of coniferous trees and lots of lakes in the Boreal Forest and few people, then through mixed deciduous trees to flat open Prairie - a huge change! And you finish in a city with half the population of its province, Manitoba.

I recall a comment from an English tourist who traveled across the country in 1967, our Centennial year. It was approximately, "From reading up beforehand, I was prepared for a long time to get across the Prairies. What I was not prepared for was that it took 3 days from Montreal just to get to the the start of the Prairies!"

Being from southern california, my whole life is a road trip. Or a decent portion of it, an hour plus a day.

Someday when I'm old & the kids are all grown up, I want to do an epic motorcycle tour. This one really captured my imagination:

11,000 miles: Riding a motorcycle to the end of the world

Recently vacationed in South Dakota. There are two roads/highways in Custer State Park I'd like to highly suggest for both motorcyclists and car drivers:

17-mile Iron Mountain Road
Two of the 3 narrow tunnels each framing Mount Rushmore in the distance

14-mile Needles Highway
Granite spires on both sides of the road

Needle's Eye (narrow tunnel) on Needles Highway

Wildlife Loop Road (18 miles long) is the 3rd road/highway that's pretty amazing too, but because of the free-roaming animals, driving a car would be my recommendation. :)
