Road trip: Savannah, GA vs. Charleston,NC ?

I am going on a road trip and I will be spending one night in GA/SC area. Now a friend told me Charleston was awesome and is worth seeing, and I have no reason not believe him...People I am vacationing with said Savannah, which I am open to but I hate to feel like I wasted time visiting.
I guess sometimes it's about preferences...I will do some research eventually as well

Have you been there? thoughts?

South Carolina. And what are you interested in? My brother went to school in Charleston and it's a really pretty town but it shuts down pretty early (most of it anyway).

I haven't been to Savannah but if you are looking to party Charleston is probably not the right choice.

Did that drive in 2007. We spent all day in Savannah and drove to a timeshare in Charleston. I liked Savannah better myself.

Ive been to both and Savannah is BY FAR the better choice...Charleston really is a beautiful town, but theres just no comparing the two really.

I couldn't tolerate the Gnats in Savannah during the warm season. Went to Charleston SC in 2001, but it was late March and the weather dropped 35ºF overnight to dip below freezing, the nice hotel had broken heat in the room (ahem, no heat), they refused to give us another room, gale force winds swiped my eye glasses while braving the pier to the aircraft carrier, etc. and then we gave up and went home.

Never been to Charleston North Carolina as the title asks, though.

I've been to both. Actually I went to Charleston just a few weeks ago. Not sure what type of things you want to do so it's hard to suggest one over the other. I guess since I've been to Savannah several times, Charleston seemed better. Probably because it was newer to me. We did a ghost tour (not really worth the $$ but the guy was so over dramatic it was funny). Also a carriage tour of the city which was nice. Went to a rooftop bar that was pretty happening but was $$$$.

Been to Charleston, SC more times than I care to remember. Nice if you're into tours, historical sites, etc. Nice symphony there. But the best time to visit Charleston, in my opinion, is during the Spoleto Festival, which just ended on June 17th.

Savannah.....nice town, I suppose. But we've lived within an hour or so of it for a couple of decades and actually avoid it as much as possible.

Again, nice tours if you're into that. Better nightlife than Charleston. You have the ocean, but you have that with both Charleston and Savannah...so no big difference. Overall, Savannah's a little town that thinks it's a big city.....had a symphony but wouldn't support it so it closed. And that scenario has repeated itself over and over in Savannah with almost any cultural outlet. The Hidden Garden tour is nice, though.

We tend to gravitate towards Augusta and Atlanta, despite the drives. Much more to do in both, outside the horse drawn tours.

Savannah is high on my list of places to go. It is supposedly just amazing. Granted I'm talking more from the architectural perspective. If you want both historical sight-seeing during the day and partying at night then I would suggest you head on down to New Orleans.

I've been to both - I was at Savannah over Memorial Day this year. Both cities are very similar, but I think Savannah might be more of a party town. Overall, I might give Charleston a slight edge because my impression is that the crime is lower there, and because everywhere we ate, the food was awesome. My wife and I took the Gray Line bus tour, which I highly recommend.

I've only been to Savannah, but a lot of my neighbors (in Charlotte, NC) have said that Charleston is a lot nicer.
My impression is that Savannah is more of a party town, while Charleston is just a nicer town overall.

Downtown Charleston is great and there are lots of beautiful girls there. Savannah is much prettier....and has some fun places to go.

If you want to see a really awesome old-school southern town...definitely go to Savannah. If you want to go to a fun town with lots of hot women and nice beaches...check out Charleston.

If you do go to Charleston, the Isle of Palms is a great place to head to the beach.

I have lived in Charleston for a few years and currently live in GA and have been to Savannah a few times. I would say Charleston hands down is more fun. There is not much to Savannah, the beaches suck and the town center/party area is very touristy where Charleston is more real. Just go down King St. in Charleston and you should be good.

Amen to that.😀
Wind Jammer here I come.

Wind Jammer rocks. If you're looking for a more party beach, Folley is it (more of the college aged group there) but Isle of Palms is nicer.
I lived in Charleston while at school and visited Savannah a few times. Both are nice but I think that Charleston has a certain charm to it that Savannah lacks. This time of year though, the college kids (College of Charleston, The Citadel and Charleston Southern) are gone for the most part and downtown is quieter than usual.
The "no-see-ums" are a bitch this time of year though, especially in the parks and beach or anywhere near a body of water.

Perhaps I am a little biased to towards Chucktown, but I just prefer it over Savannah. Neither one is bad. Just different personalities.

Just don't go too far north if you don't want to get robbed. 😀
