Road Test: 2003 Mercury Marauder

I would say people who buy this car will be ol' folks that dreamt about driving a Marauder. I just don't see the purpose of this car in the world. The Infiniti M45 will start at 41K and it looks 10000000 times better. I saw one the other day on the road and it looks much better than in the pics. The Lincoln LS seems a better buy too.

Good read. Sucks it lacks low end umph though. And they made a mistake: 99-02 Cobra engines made 320hp, not 302. (96-98s made 305)

There was a big issue involving Cobra's "losing" 20 ponies due to the exhaust if I recall well. So I think 302 is right

That had nothing to do with the engine. Like you said, the "fix" only had to do with the exhaust. It was fixed in the '01 and '02 versions from the factory, so it still is 320

Have you ever driven an LS? They're REALLY slow...

This car serves the same purpose the Impalla SS did. This is not exactly a everyday car either. Its meant for enthusiasts.

You are right. I guess Edmunds should have said something like 99 Cobras made 302HP, no Cobras were made in 2000 and 01 and 02 models are 320HP

Would be a fun car to rent for those trips on the highway. Flash the highs a few times and other vehicles will clear away a path for your expeditious desires.

Either you read that sentence wrong, or you just read it too fast. READ it again:

"A 4.6-liter, double overhead cam V8 with 302 horsepower and 318 pound-feet of torque powers the Marauder. This is essentially the same engine found in the 2002 Ford Mustang Cobra."

"Essentially" the same engine, not EXACTLY the same. It doesn't mean that it is going to produce the SAME amount of horsepower. Difference in exhaust routing, tuning, etc. can change how much HP the engine is going to end up producing.

The Toyota Camry, Toyota Avalon, and Lexus ES300 all use "essentially" the same 3.0 liter V6. However, that engine makes 193 HP in the Camry, 210 HP in the Avalon, and 220 HP in the ES300.

Indeed the M45 is very ugly. I wouldn't want a Marauder either, except on some occasion, like somewhere quiet up in Montana where I can put the pedal to the metal and hear that engine roar.

I agree. The M45 is ugly as sh!t. I'd take the Marauder over the M45 on looks alone.

when you see one of those on the road slow up, odd's of it being an old person..low odd's of it being an undercover statey. good....fear the marauder

the fix had to do with teh exhuast and the intake. some intakes were replaced and some were extruded and honded. I can vouch for the fact that the fix did make a difference. And btw, there was no 2000 or 2002 cobra. The 99,01 have teh 320hp and the 2003 have the very underatted 390hp.

My car now makes 298hp at the rear wheels and and 300tq at the rear wheels (after a little modding... 🙂 ), which equates to abotu 355-360 at the flywheel...

There's only two things that kept me from buying this car - it wasn't for sale when I was seriously looking for cars, although I had heard the rumors and was very interested in it, and secondly, the sticker price is 35 grand. Way too steep. Pricing it that high ensures that only hardcore enthusiasts will purchase it. Not guys who want a lot of power for as little money as possible. If it wasn't so much, I'd even consider trading in the Altima for it.

Despite the overabundance of riceboys here at the forums, I believe you are the first person to here to have said something positive about the M45's styling. I am glad that you like the styling of the M45. I personally think that it is the fugliest car ever made. Cheers.

I don't believe it does, I don't remember seeing anything like that.

If it does, it's awfully weak. The new Cobra gets what, 390 HP?

Viper GTS

Yeh, I know that it's not, but I thought it was going to be though.

i would have to agree. well you do have those aztek's and those new thunderbirds to compete with for ugliest car..

i saw one the other day when i was going to crapusa (sort of a last resort looking for an i815 board)... dark black, dark tint, and dual exhaust straight out the back... car was sweet.

hmmm... i wonder if it could be x-planned?

What's wrong with the Thunderbird? It looks fine to me. It's got the best qualities of a retro 50's style cruiser, including the exterior styling.

Is this your ideal car?
