On the other hand, there are words that are stipulated to be unacceptable, offencive and derogatory. The example you gave is one of those words. It's so different from "cornbread" or "redneck", etc. The latter are stereotypes, but they don't rile a crowd, at least not easily. Saying n*gg*r on the hand could and would likely rile a crowd or an individual to whom it's directed.
