Also, please note it's 'Cyclist', not 'Bicyclist', just because bicyclist is redundant. It's like saying 'I'm a Quaddriver'. Just say driver, I care not how many wheels you use to do it! 😉

 What if he was on a unicycle or tricycle?

Guy was breaking the law by blocking traffic, so  for being forceably moved back to the bike lane. There must be something about squashing your crotch on a bike seat all day that makes all bicyclists feel like they own the roads.....maybe some vital artery is being pinched thereby depriving their brains of valuable chemicals or something.

Log off and take your head for a sh1t.
He's just trying to annoy me. He trolls all cycling threads to this end.

We all need a hobby, right?

Okay, read the article.

1. Bike lanes do get filled with crap now and then, so this is plausible.

2. Bus driver needed to give the guy more room.

3. Bike guy should have just taken down the bus number/route and called it in.

4. Bus driver f*cked up letting the passenger off/on.

Cyclist could have handled this better, but he's got a valid gripe with regard to the passenger assaulting him.

That said, when you have people casually threaten your life on a near-daily basis, eventually you snap and do something like this. Not saying it's right, but I am saying you have to be a bike commuter to really know what it's like to have people not think twice about nearly killing you for legally being in the road.

Agreed. It was 50/50 until the passenger got 'punchy'.

stay in bike lines or get off the bike

until bikes have tag fees and license their riders they don't deserve to use the road. half the time they don't obey any traffic rules around here

Until you obtain a license to Kill, give all Cyclists as much room as you can. <^>:|

STFU.... THE SIDEWALK is not a BIKE LANE. Read the f'ing article. It is obvious the OP wants to skew the truth.

And he wasn't breaking the law.

Just after 9 a.m. January 22, 2004, a bus approached Albright on a viaduct east of the Hawthorne Bridge. At the time, Albright was not riding in the bicycle lane; he says it contained too much gravel used during a recent storm to ride safely.

Okay, let's take that one step further and put tag fees on a sliding scale by vehicle weight and emissions since you're so worried about the roadways, shall we?

If road conditions are not safe then don't ride. Or get a bike that can handle the road conditions.

What we have here is an asshole bicker that think he owns a bike lane and half of the traffic lan and then crys when a bus get two close. Well no ****** a bus is going to be close to you when your in the middle of the lane.

The Engrish is stong with this one.

One thing I have to add to this, since I'm a Portland area native:

Oregon does not use salt on its roads in the winter, they use coarse sand/fine gravel/however you want to look at it.

Once the snow & ice are gone they come back & streetsweep to get it off the road, but until that happens the loose material would be a little treacherous for a bike.

This isn't your normal every day streetside crap, this was intentionally put down. Also it's not put down everywhere, nor can it be picked up everywhere instantaneously when the snow melts.

cyclist could include motorcycle, so the OP is correct in using bicyclist.

I don't care if you're the most law abiding and courteous bike rider in the world - that doesn't mean bike riders in general are, like the one in the article.
Fvck all the bike riders who ride in the middle of the lane. Fvck the bike riders who do not hand signal or stop at red lights or stop signs. There are bad drivers out there just like there are bad bike riders.
Bike riders who obey the law and are courteous completely have my sympathy when drivers try to run them off the road or generally put them in harm. But as a bike rider, you have to understand our point of view when we constantly have to deal with your (bike riders as a collective) shenanigans, as much as you expect us to understand your POV.

Yeah, I don't think I'd turn that guy in even if I did know who he was. The guy didn't want to ride on the god damn bike path made for him? Thats like me driving my car on the sidewalk and then b|tching that people don't get out of my way.

What if when you are driving your car you had to swerve out of your lane and into another due to an obstruction in your lane that you could not brake for? Would an affected driver in that lane be justified in driving aggresively against you? No.

Swerving into another lane to avoid a piece of metal seems counterproductive. A 2 car accident is going to cost me a lot more then a couple new tires.

Bike path or no bike path, Cyclists are legal residents of city streets. The issue in question is not that there was a confrontation, however the issue at hand is weather the man should be sued for getting off the bus and attempting to attack him. There is a video tape that shows that it would appear the man swung at him. I.E. there is grounds for and a high probability of a suit being won.

Guy on bus in the wrong.
Cyclist in the right (edit: not in the right for blocking traffic, however for riding on the road)

/thread

There would be if they could find the guy...sounds like the bike dude waited to long to cash in, and now the dollar train has moved onto the next station. 😛

Plus, I don't think cutting off a bus is exactly the best behavior either. Sounds like they're both douches to me.

So because some cyclists are dicks, you're going to treat them all like this?

In law enforcement, they call that profiling.

Paths are sometimes chock-full of gravel and glass and tires are expensive. The OP seemed to indicate this was the case.

Roads are sometimes full of gravel, glass, pieces of old tires, people, etc. That doesn't mean I should drive on the sidewalk.

/devil's advocate.

he could be a unicyclist

or a tricyclist

so no, it isn't redundant.

I'm sorry, but cars (and bikes in some states) are never allowed on the sidewalk so your example doesn't fly.

Bikes are supposed to be in the road "as near to the right as is practical". If the right side of the road is mangled or full of debris, or whatever, the cyclist is well within his rights to ride around this stuff. It is the motorists' job to be aware of these details in the law (though they almost never are) and be patient for a second as the guy on the bike negotiates around the crap in the road.
