RNC tells TV stations not to run anti-Bush ads

Page 3 - Seeking answers? Join the AnandTech community: where nearly half-a-million members share solutions and discuss the latest tech.
Let's clear up a couple of points:

1. If the money raised for the ads was done in violation of the law, the media are not in violation of the law even if they knowingly ran the ads.
2. This issue is within the jurisdiction of the FCC, not the RNC.
3. The Republicans are obviously getting desperate when their own Republican FCC chief won't declare MoveOn.Org in violation of the law, but the RNC will. All of which suggests the Republicans think Bush is in deep trouble. They'd be right about that, though I still think he's gonna' win.
4. MoveOn.org has three separate funds, only one of which is used for the Bush attack ads.
5. MoveOn.org has thousands of contributors who have given small donations. I just gave $30 to get a copy of their video because the RNC sent out their letter. I'm sure thousands will do likewise. What a BONER MOVE BY THE REPUBLICANS! Soros won't have to give another dime at this rate.
6. Bush's campaign ship is taking on huge amounts of water. They've either got to bail faster, or come up with a quick fix for the leaking, otherwise that ship is going DOWN.

The MoveOn.org ads are the most effective political ads I've seen in years. The Polygraph ad is a killer....

The problem with it is, that the RNC is a Political Apparatus seeking election and is also the defacto controller of all parts of the Federal Government. If that doesn't cause concern for you what would?

so that makes it okay?

so the better alternative is to let the democrats who also are seeking election and the de-facto controller of parts of the government should get to do pretty much what they want without "bothersome legal questions" form the opposing side?

what concerns me is the dem penchant for ignoring the law when they have something to gain from it

Where are the Democrats ignoring the law in this thread?

You mean like the marriage of same sex couples in CA? Dems ignore the law because to them, the laws of the land are more "guidelines." However, let a Repuplican break the law and all of sudden the sky is falling!!

LOL what a laugh. Like the Republicans are more upstanding citizens than the democrats

No one has even accused the RNC of breaking the law. They have spoken out of line though.

Cad we already know what this thread is about. Every time Jhhnn posts confirms it. It's about finding an issue that both brain cells can get wrapped around and whining and ranting about it. This is why their party is on the outside looking in ( and licking the windows I might add). They are devoid of ideas or issues but they have an overabundance of whiners and ranters. One would have thought that they learned this lesson in 2002 but I gave them way more credit than they deserved. Not only have these losers failed to control even a single part of the federal government they didn't even have the courage of their convictions to present a "loyal opposition". The "anybody but Bush" herd disgusts me in the extreme. Not only is it completely devoid of ideas/issues or alteratives it is a cowardly cop-out.

Gotta love you, UQ, I'd like for you get on national TV as a representative of the raving right, let the public see the face of what 25 years of false patriotism and selfish greed spouting vitriol and veiled hate thru the media can actually accomplish. Somehow, someway, you seem to be able to reduce any discourse to personal attack and ad-hom, any attempt at reasonable thought to sloganism, while demonizing opposing viewpoints via belittlement and dehumanization. Your post is entirely off-topic, and offers zero argument pertinent to the issue at hand. Your desperation and frustration inherent in adopting and advocating ideological positions based on lies is beginning to show, and it's not pretty. Back up, take a look at yourself and what you believe, try to figure out if the people who popularized your way of thinking actually believe a word of it themselves, or if you're merely being used in a callous fashion. I recognize that's probably difficult for a person in your position, having been indoctrinated from a young age, but even the most abused victims can often achieve stunning recoveries.

Sorry, but my response is spot on and completely pertinent to the topic at hand. It clearly describes you and those of your ilk for exactly what you are. This is a total and complete non-issue, politics as usual for either party but you and those like you have decided once again to rant and whine about nothing. Keep doing it and spend another 4 years on the outside looking in, controlling neither Congress nor the White House. That'll be me, in your face, laughing at you the entire time. The election's coming and you better smarten up pretty quick because the guy who you've claimed is so stupid is about to outsmart you once again.

Well at least his handlers might🙂

UQ, your brilliant display of conservative hatred and white male rage -- the same one that Limbaugh taps into -- might get some of the dittoheads smirking like simians who just tasted their own poop, but for everyone else it's patently obvious that your "technique" (and I use that term lightly) of dehumanizing your opponent to somehow invalidate their arguments is as pathetic as the RNC are being right now. If you really had valid reason to be so casually dismissive, you wouldn't be in here posting, now would you?

In case anyone's forgotten, this is the politics and news forum. This issue, while certainly not the biggest story of the day, is both politics and news. No one's losing sleep over the RNC's desperate attempts to control the media, and thus control the race for the presidency, but it certainly shows just how scared the RNC are of these MoveOn spots and what lengths they'll go to in order to stop them.

Like I said, the RNC are a bunch of pussies. 🙂

So does that make it better or worse?

The Democrats disgust me even more than Republicans. The Republicans at least have an agenda, fscked up as some of it is, that they are at least moving forward. When they were in the minority in the 90's they at least put up enough of a fight to ensure some sort of checks and balances occured (although their rolling over on defense and intelligence spending until '98 hurt this country badly). The Democrats, with the exception of a few judges, haven't even come close to doing that. They made some noise last election cycle but that was about it. Where is Tom Daschle by the way. I remember a couple of years ago he made a point of being a pain in the ass every time GW breathed hard. Where the fsck is he? Where's the rest of the Democrats. What is their agenda, plans, ideas. Do they have any? Or is it gonna be more whining about nothing. If their pla is to run on the "anybody but Bush' platform we all better buy some ear plugs because it's gonna be four more years of listening to the same liberal whiners, whining about the same things. Only louder, at least until the chants of "Hil-la-ry, Hil-la-ry", come spewing out. At which time the republican party will double all previous fund raising amounts.

Your arguments invalidate themselves. I'm simply pointing it out and laughing at you and those like you. It is neither conservative hatred nor white male rage. Sorry.

I've seen your posts around here for a while, I know what I'm dealing with. 😉

Further, if you should be laughing at anyone, you should be laughing at the RNC. They control all aspects of our gov't, yet they're whining and bitching about MoveOn.org, "Oh please, don't run those horrible ads besmirching our precious. Oh for the love of god, please stop violating federal law, or, or, or we'll have our attorneys send you another letter." Wankers. They outgun the democratic candidates to the tune of $100 million + and they can't stop moaning. Your condescension is truly misplaced.

You're not using an analogous example. It is, indeed, common for copyright holders and their lawyers to send 'cease and desisit' letters prior to filing suit... I've done it on a number of occasions. What would not be common, however, would be for one of the competitors of a site/publications that published one of my articles articles to send a cease and desist letter to the editors of the site, demanding that they cease and desist from publishing it. They do not speak on my behalf. If they genuinely feel that my article had been published illegally, against my wishes (or those of other legitimate publishers of it), the proper course of action would be for them to contact me/us, informing us of the situation. I could then confirm whether or not my copyrights were being violated and, if deemed necessary, take action.

If the RNC feels that laws have been broken, then they would be well within their rights to contact the appropriate authorities and ask them to take action. Those authorities could then investigate the alleged violation and choose whether or not to take action. They are not, however, acting ethically in making legal threats, themselves. At best, it's an example of vigilantism... at worst, harrassment.

You didn't answer the question. Is it or is it not common practice for lawyers to write these kinds of letters prior to any legal actions being taken? Yes or No? The answer is, yes it is very common for it to happen. The only difference in this case is that it happens to be the RNC's lawyers and it gives the usual bunch of whiney bastards something else to whine about.

How is this any different than me writing a letter to CBS and telling them I don't agree with their actions because of XYandZ? They are not threatening any specific action on their part, but simply advising them of their opinion of the legality of these ads. Are you telling me that if the shoe was on the other foot the DNC wouldn't do the exact same thing? Another freakin mountain out of a molehill.....

The difference is that you would not be representing yourself as the legal counsel of a national political organization whose candidate is currently the President of the US in saying something along the lines of "As a broadcaster licensed by the Federal Communications Commission, you have a responsibility to the viewing public, and to your licensing agency, to refrain from complicity in any illegal activity... Now that you have been apprised of the law, to prevent further violations of federal law, we urge you to remove these advertisements from your station's broadcast rotation."

Would the DNC do the exact same thing (or something just as bad)? Perhaps; Maybe even "probably..." And if they did, they would be just as much in the wrong. Are you looking for me to claim that democrates are pure white angelic beings, incapable of doing unjust things? Politicians are very often scumbags... regardless of their political affiliations. And the difference between the two parties ceased having any ideological basis that reflects the wants and desires of their constituency years ago (of there ever was such a one). Unfortunately, though, too many in this forum, and outside of it, seem either unable or unwilling to see any fault in their preferred party and any good in opposition parties (except in rare occasions where both actually manage to agree on something).

Not only is this letter coming from a national political organization, it is coming from the political party in power!

This is a bare knuckled effort at intimidation of the media. It is possibly the single dumbest thing a political party has done in the last 100 years. They will be excoriated and IGNORED.

Only an organization hanging on by its fingernails would pull such a stupid stunt.

This thing is huge and may be what brings Bush down. You think all those political commentators aren't going to rake the Republicans over the coals for this? How many media executives are now going to slit Bush's political throat for this gaff? We'll see....

I'd ask for Gillespie's resignation if I were Bush. Ditto for their lawyer.

Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Thanks for proving my point, Bobby. Ranting on about nothing. When are you liberals/Democrats gonna quit whining and actually do something. Ever?

Dave:

Bwuahahaha!

Dude, on March 20 you will be a civilian. Better buy a thinking cap to replace the one Uncle Sam gave you. 🙂

Congrats on serving your country and getting out almost alive. I may not agree with you often, but I gotta' respect a man who did his time.

Uncle didn't give me anything and even if he did there's nothing wrong with the one I got. Or are you one of those "military = stupid" people?
Or is it just a anyone that doesn't agree with you kind of thing?

Congrats on serving your country and getting out almost alive.

Thank you and for the record I'm "fully" alive.

Well, now I have to rethink my position. The old saying goes, "It takes one to know one" suddenly becomes pertinent to me. Perhaps I and others are really just you? 😛 😉

congrats UQ, is'nt sad most civilians never thank those in the military for voluntarily giving their constitutional rights to serve in the armed forces?

what is your MOS? i was a 12 bravo(combat engineer) in the army and am currently living at Fort Hood.

No one I know is looking for thanks. Just the required support when it is needed.

I'm Navy so it's NEC's, not MOS. Most of mine have to do with submarine fire control systems. I also have two other's- 2735; Information Systems Administrator and 2780; Network Security Vulnerability Technician
