Washington households have received a Republican National Committee fund-raiser labeled "Census Document" even though Congress passed a law seeking to ban such misleading documents.

The mailer comes with a capitalized message on the envelope: "DO NOT DESTROY/OFFICIAL DOCUMENT", saying it contains a "Census Document," while inside would-be givers are asked to answer questions about their political views.

"The document inside isn't from the Census Bureau: But it is somebody you might have heard of: Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele," wrote Jim Camden in the Spokane "Spokesman-Review.
WTF? I guess when you spend money on lesbian bondage strippers, you gotta replenish that bank account any way possible.

 yawn...
There was a thread about this a couple months ago.

I got one last month - it clearly states it is NOT the census right on the packaging and the form. Only a moron(ie. leftists) could mistake it for a census form.

Did you have an extra full cup o rage today? :p

Leftists weren't fooled and exposed this crap. Only morons (rightists) would fill it out and actually be dumb enough to defend this practice.

You have to be really dumb to think this is a census form. And what is it with the loony left worrying about what republicans are sending to republicans?

I think my wife and I got one of those, I read the fine fine print until I found the disclaimer that it was not an official government document and it promptly got relegated to my circular file.

Sadly, not many people read the fine fine print, so I consider such mailings in the reprehensible class of political deceptions.

The fine print that says "Commissioned by the Republican party", or the fine print that says "2009 Congressional District census"?

Not only was it retarded to label this census, albeit it being a census for the RNC just not the official one, any retard who can't see it wasn't the official one and did send it back out and is now bitching about it is retarded.

Yes, do you?

The question was why would they try and portray this mailer as a Census form?

A census is the procedure of systematically acquiring and recording information about the members of a given population.

In this case, the members of a given population were Republicans. So, whats the problem?

Oh wait nvm. You probably thought the only census's there are are from the US Government. Got it.

No, but it appears that you thought this was not an attempt to mislead with a mailing labelled "CENSUS" during a Census year....with the text "DO NOT DESTROY OFFICIAL DOCUMENT".

Probably was just a coincidence when they did it in 2000 that it was also a Census year.

Got it.

"Of course, duping people is the point. ... That's one of the reasons why it works so well,” said one Republican operative familiar with the program, who said it’s among the RNC’s most lucrative fundraising initiatives. “They will likely mail millions this year [with] incredible targeting.”

Welcome to two months ago.

In any event the form clearly states: "Commissioned by the Republican Party"

So, the real question is, does the federal government hold a monopoly on the word "census"?

WASHINGTON — You can count at least one partisan Republican as disgusted with his party's fundraising letters that appear to be from the Census Bureau.
Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., sponsored legislation that passed the House unanimously Wednesday to stop the GOP tactic. The bill went to the Senate.
Issa was angry that this was the second time the message had to be sent to the Republican National Committee — already in trouble with some of its supporters for spending $1,946 at a sex-themed California nightclub.
The RNC found a loophole in a law passed just weeks ago, as the 2010 census was underway. The original statute requires nongovernment mailings using the word "census" on the outside of the envelope to have a disclaimer that it is not a government document and to display the sender's return address.
The law was passed after the RNC used the word "census" on the envelope of a January mailing.
The RNC skirted the new law in a new mailing that had the word visible through a plastic window. Issa's bill would extend the restrictions to any visible use of the word "census."
Issa said, "When it comes to the census there is no separation between Republicans and Democrats. Working together we thought we put an end to this deceptive practice. Unfortunately, the foolishness of the RNC to move forward with yet another deceptive mail piece has caused us to act again."

So, the real question is, why are they so hell bent on duping Republicans?

Um ...because it is? Have you ever seen the real Census? Right on the envelope it says in big letter United States Census XXXX; U.S. Census Form Enclosed YOUR RESPONSE IS REQUIRED BY LAW The idea that someone wouldn't be able to tell these two apart is silly. Do you confuse you electric bill with your junk mail?

Certainly there are many silly Republicans that not know the difference. Obviously they were trying to dupe those people into thinking it was an US Census form. They did the same thing in 2000.

"Of course, duping people is the point. ... That's one of the reasons why it works so well,” said one Republican operative familiar with the program, who said it’s among the RNC’s most lucrative fundraising initiatives. “They will likely mail millions this year [with] incredible targeting.”

So the question is why is the RNC trying to dupe Republicans into thinking it's a US Census?

Does anyone REALLY think the GOP wasn't trying to mislead people into thinking it's a US Census document?

Pssst .....

GOP Vote Caging

It's an election year. The Cons look at it as a tool to suppress voting. If your local BoE does not have your current mailing address and your "GOP Census Form" is returned to the Con Party HQ ....

Your vote will be challenged.

This is obviously designed to mislead people into thinking it is connected with the real census, as some kind of supplemental form. It's clearly trying to piggyback on all of the advertising telling the public to look for and fill out their census.

Just typically misleading advertising or unethical fraud is the part open to debate. Personally my outrage-o-meter is barely making it into the yellow zone, and my cup o' rage isn't even half full.

Who on earth wouldn't think that when it's so obvious?

They did it in two different Census years. A law is made to prevent it again and they skirted it.

"The RNC found a loophole in a law passed just weeks ago, as the 2010 census was underway.
