RMA'D my Mobo, and Video Card

Ok, so when I turn on the comp, I can hear the ram tallying etc. all the fans work, LED's all come on...but the monitor stays in standby mode. It's not hte monitor as it works fine on other comps, and even recently bought an LCD and the saem thing happens. IT's not the cables, near as I can tell. Not the RAM as I already tried each stick individually and got the same result.

Initially I thought it was the video card, so I RMA'D it, same thing still happens. RMA'd the mobo today (took about a month to get it back), and the same thing still happens. So what's that leave?? Processor, PSU?? Again, all the fans spin, and the LED's come on...can just part of a power supply fail, like the 12v rail for my video card maybe??

it's an AMD 3500+, THermaltake 420W, eVGA 6800GT, Samsung Deskstar 230 gig, 1 gig of Corsair Value Ram, and an ASUS a8v deluxe

Is your CPU heatsink warm to the touch? That should help indicate whether the CPU is actually running or not . . . also what beeps do you get when you boot up?

OK how warm should it be, because i ran the comp for about 5 minutes, and then removed the heatsink and it was stone cold, well not stone cold, but room temperature basically. Should it have been warm/hot to the touch? Both the processor and heat sink were cool is what i'm saying. I get no beeps when I boot up, jut the hard drive clicking.....

Other notes: keyboard lights work, such as the capslock indicator, and the cdrom will eject when i hit the eject button.

If it's not hot, then it's not doing anything, which means it's probably not working. You shouldn't take the heatsink OFF... it's not good to put it on and take it off over and over. Hopefully you're cleaning the die and putting on new thermal compound each time at least.

At any rate... when you turn your computer on you should hear one beep. This indicates that it passes the POST process, and your system is alright to boot. If it doesn't beep, then there's something wrong.

If it doesn't beep I would suggest you replace the motherboard, but since you already did, I would say the PSU is a good bet. What brand is it??

Thermaltake Purepower....but if other things are getting power, and the fans are spinning, wouldn't that mean the PSU is still working? or can just individual rails on it go?

Do you have another system or a friends system you can test the CPU in? That would tell you straight away if the CPU is bad. if so RMA the CPU.

no they don't actually...I have to hit hte buttons to get hte lights to go on or off

I am having a very similar problem, except in my case, I have major video artifacting (BFG 6800GT) all of a sudden after 4 months with this setup. I will sometimes boot OK and then artifact, or it will artifact from the start. RMA'd the VC and bought a new MB. I even tried different RAM. Knowing the CPU is OK, I figured it must be a power issue. So I unplugged my Fortron Blue Storm 500w from the VC and used a cheap spare PSU just to plug it into the VC and once I turn it on viola, it works. Something is messed with my PS, which I find unusual given that this Fortron is a really good PS.

Try the PS route and see what happens. That would be a lot easier than a CPU to return to a store if you have to as you will be hard pressed to even find, much less return a CPU at a store.

I would bet its the PSU as well.

I have had this Antec TP330 for almost 5 years now, some lines are burnt but this thing is still driving.

i'm gonna go to best buy later on today and buy a cheap PSU, or comp usa. Pop in a new PSU and see if that solves the problem...if that was the issue the last couple months I'm gonna be kinda ticked off after I Rma'd my mobo and vid card

I really shouldn't be in this thread after reading it but I will state this:

If you buy this so called cheap PSU then you may be ending up RMAing all the hardware for a justified reason this time so I wouldn't go that route.
