RMA an OEM Deskstar 75GXP drive?

I bought a 75G 75GXP drive on eBay (a mistake I intend not to repeat) which appears to be dead. I tried to return it but the seller said "as is" all over the auction so it appears I'm SOL there.
When I looked into IBM's RMA process they wouldn't accept the drive's serial number because it was apparently from an OEM computer manufacturer instead of sold as a bare drive. Is there any way I can get this drive fixed or do I now have an IBM paperweight?

You probably ended up getting some's replacement for their IBM paperweight hard drive 🙁 I don't know what to tell you...I think you're out of luck.

Call IBM with the serial number on the HD - they do take RMAs on some OEM (depends on their agreement with the vendor).

I hope you did not pay too much for this.

The other question is if you can sell a harddrive "as is", even if it is just a paperweight.

Thats just really cold! I hope you never really do this!

No, D00D, that's what happened to him.

I am questioning if even with the "as is" stipulation this is legal on eBay.
Anyway.

The "As is" stipulation basically makes it all peachy for the seller 🙁
Sorry man, I think you're out of luck. You could try selling it again, but that's why you don't buy "as is" stuff off eBay, ESPECIALLY IBM.

🙁 Live and learn I guess. This is why trading here is so much better than on eBay. None of this "as-is" BS.
I just wish IBM would take it back, seems dumb that the only bastardizing feature of this drive is its serial number. 😛

Isn't there a 3 year warrenty on hard drives regardless of if they were bought it oem or not. Hopefully my 60 gxp won't go anytime soon(crossing fingers).

IBM gives a discount on drives to companies like Dell or Gateway and leaves the warranty up to them, so unfortunately I'm stuck since I don't even know what company's computer this drive came from.
My fault for buying a notoriously unreliable drive in a notoriously unreliable market.
