Hi 🙂

Im goin to put the PC in my living room onto my LAN.
Its gonna need 25m of cable so goin to have to put the cable together myself.
Im goin to buy a small reel of Cat5 UTP cable, RJ45 connectors and some snagless booties 😉 (for the cable not me 😛 )
Ive seen some 8 way crimping tools but theyre kinda expensive 🙁 Can i do it without crimping tool?

Ive never done this before and aint got a clue how to do it 🙁 but i am sure with u guys help i can pull it off 🙂

If anyone knows of any URL's showin u how to with piccys would be gratefully received 😉

I don't really know of a way without a crimper. 🙁 I'm sure there has to be a way, but none that I know of. If you haven't gotten the CAT5 yet, I highly recommend getting getting "Plenum" certified CAT5. Also, make sure it's shielded. As for the order of the wires..

thanx geek 🙂

Ive just been lookin at one of my existing connectors, hmmm?

Looks like u strip back the outer sheathing and thread each individual wire through and then use these to drag the outer sheath into its one-way clamp?
Then do u pop in the contacts and use the crimper to press them in? Do these contacts pierce the sheaths of the individual wires?

It looks like this is probably how its done, but could do with some advice from someone who knows 🙂

thanx,

rockhard 😀

Yep. I should've explained a little bit more. You basically cut the outer plastic for the cable carefully (once you do it a while you'll get more used to it), straighten out all of the wires, and then flatten them out. Next, place them in that order I gave you. From there, move them closely together but STILL in the same order. If you're new at it, that usually takes the longest. Then, grab your connector, and slip it in. Make sure they're all pressed up to the top, and, of course, in the order, again, and crimp it forcefully. That should be it.

Oh, Radioshack carries a crimper I'm pretty sure. I just borrowed a friend's, because they do tend to run a little bit expensive, and since it's usually just a one or two time job, there's no need to really own one.

Rockhard,

Don't bother with crimping. Connect the cable to RJ45 jacks, pins 1,2,3,and 6. Then use patch cords between the jacks and the NIC. MUCH better than crimping directly to the cable.

Antisocial-Virge,

Nice Site you posted above. I'm about to crimp me some cables now for my patch panel and hub in the basement.

Thanks!
