RJ-45 extension?

I have two RJ-45 cables, and I want to connect them to extend over a greater distance. Is this possible, either through a device or by soldering them?

Assuming you're not going over the max length of a cat5 run, places like radio shack (and many others) sell small connectors that you can use that basically look like two back-to-back rj-45 jacks in a small plastic housing. Just make sure you don't get the "crossover converter" type.

Dont stretch the cable over 300 feet, thats a max with quality cable. If its near that length (with both cables) or longer, use a powered hub or switch to connect the lines, it will act as a repeater for the signal.

just a note on using a coupler though, most will drop the rating from 100bt to 10bt, check for this as well as making sure its not a crossover coupler like Ladi stated.
