before when i had my 9800pro and would go to overclock it with rivatuner before youre oc setting changes it has to test.. which is done by u hitting the test button. when doing this with my 9800pro (hitting the test button) the little box comes up with 2 lines and it tests it.. with my 6800n when u hit the test button the my sreen just flashes quickly(the little box animation doesnt come up) and the test passes... my question is if its not testing properly with my 6800nu do i risk damaging my card???? or is this normal with nvidia cards...and only the ati cards get the animation box??? when i enable constant performance the test option works like my 9800pro. Or is this normal with nvidia cards(the animation not coming up)
 
Not sure if this will help or not. On my FX5900 the testing seems to work fine, it won't let you have a setting that will fubar your computer forcing you to reset. However, on my brother's 6600 vanilla it doesn't seem to work properly. The test will ALWAYS pass even if that setting will produce significant artifacts and can even hang the computer when trying the test. There may or may not be a problem with the testing algorithm on the GF6 series.

hmm thanks for help.. ya because with my 9800pro when u hit the test button it acutally tests the little box with the animation comes up... cant believe know one else has noticed this....
 
It is EXTREMELY important to recognize that passing that test does NOT ensure you will not damage your card (true of ANY card). It only verifies that memory is correctly read and instructions are correctly processed at those settings. (For a VERY FEW iterations)

To ensure you do not damage your card, you need to raise your speeds/volts in SMALL increments, test (NOT the test button... test with an application while monitoring temperatures and image quality), repeat until undesireable behavior occurs and then back off those settings a little.

HEAT is what will fubar your card and RivaTuner does NOT monitor that. (How could it in a few seconds of testing)

Good, conservative method is the ONLY way to prevent damage to your card!

When I set my clocks, I only use RivaTuner to enable OC'ing. When it asks to boot to ensure check stock speeds I say Yes, but then I don't return to RivaTuner on the re-boot. Instead, I use the (now available) clock sets and Test Button of the Nvidia control panel.

You might want to see if this works for your card.
