Right, but that is sort of the point for those that need to pick up something retail.

Esp pros...they break a piece of gear, they can't afford to wait for it to ship. They are more than willing to pay extra to have it now.

Most of the people that bitch about these shops can't even afford the gear off CL / Ebay.

QFT and most are more apt to review something bad than to give it a good review.

Also esp with a lot of this gear, how it 'feels' is a big part.

I think I bought from B&H once 'cause they have a lower price on the digicam I wanted. Most of the time I just buy from Amazon 'cause they don't tax and have free shipping.

Exactly. I believe their prices fall between typical retail outlets and e-tailers (so they're better than say Best Buy in price but not as good as online, but offer better service than either).

Really? Admittedly I haven't been in a ritz/wolf in a long time, but I remember their staff always being as clueless and pushy as any bestbuy...and just as expensive.

Maybe things changed (or it's just the store in my area that suck). If so, that's too bad.

smartass is assuming that as a pro you have absolutely always had everything you needed despite any last minute changes at a job.

I am in IS/IT now...however; I know a couple director types and quite a few profession photographers, my brother being one of them.

In the IS/IT field I know I can source USB cables extremely cheap outside retail...however; out on a job and never being informed that the furniture the office selected requires extremely long cabling I need to find it locally.

Likewise should the equipment I have sent to meet me at a location arrive DOA, I need to go buy something quickly...the extra cost at a retail facility is far less than flying back home and rescheduling, or staying additional days due to a shipping delay.

While one tries to have double of things, it's not always feasible nor possible esp if travelling.

I am not sure why people like yourself try to play devil's advocate so hard on retail businesses. If you are someone that never finds themself ever at a need to source something locally due to urgency, it's doubtful you are doing that much work.

I almost do 100% of all my shopping online...about the only thing I am buying locally is groceries and gas. I still see the value of being able to pay extra to walk into a store and pick up a tool, part, etc when I need one.

You've never actually been to a camera store have you? Colonial Photo in Orlando is the only true camera shop of which I am aware. And not really because the camera stuff is only about 30% of the inventory - the rest is a true hobby store.

Once Ritz stops being photoshop heroes and trying to correct color on something that doesn't need it, begins processing E-6 and Black and White - has darkroom chemicals for all the major processes, enlargers, tanks, etc. And actually sells film cameras - THEN I'll call them a camera shop. For now they are nothing but an overpriced B&M that doesn't sell good film.

Walk in, tell them "No color correction, no density correction" and they won't correct any of your C-41 film. It's just that simple.

They will process E-6 and B&W as well, and even though they do it by mail it's typically faster than if I send it out on my own with the prepaid Fuji mailers.

woah dude. I think we got to a bad start. As someone trying to get out of IT once and for all, i know what that is like. However, there are many retail places I would try before I went to Best Buy for cables. Or Ritz for a lens or tripod or whatever. I don't typically buy my stuff retail either, but I never had to by reasons of forgetting something or equipment failure. There are times I have bought something intentionally while shopping around, even after looking online. Some retail B&M stores do have something on sale that can't be beat sometimes.
If did forget something, I'm sure Ritz wouldn't be on the list.

The Ritz camera shops here carry things the electronics stores do not. If I needed a filter or say a FD lens in the past I knew Ritz would have it.

Like I had mentioned most don't have the urgent need nor cash flow to justify spending more than just waiting for an online order to ship.

Same thing with boater's world and the like. You can get all of that online much cheaper, but if you wake up and find out a 7am that you need something chances are for specialty boating gear, Wal Mart's not going to have it.
 
They are generally overpriced, but I usually poked around just to see what was available. I did FINALLY find a good shoulder camera bag which wasn't insanely priced (Lowepro, I mean, seriously?!?), and the girl behind the counter was extremely cute and engaging. Ah, well, maybe they'll have a good liquidation, if it goes that far. 🙂
