Ripping through line in port

Has anyone found a decent way to rip songs through the line in port? I am trying to pull some stuff off Cassettes and can't seem to find a decent software or get the settings right. Anybody been through this and gotten something to work well?

i think that you mean recording. Im prety sure that ripping is for CDs. What kind of sound card do you have? You might want to make sure that you are using good cables, those can make a HUGE difference. If you have a ghetto brand sound card, you might not be able to get good quality because the quality of the components are crappy.

Okay then, Recording through line in port ;-)

I have a Sound Blaster Live and pretty good cables. I can't seem to get a decent record level, even with the levels set all the way up. It's like it's dropping half the sound off or something.

I am using a shareware prog called Audiomagic right now, but am open to suggestions of better ones

Should I run the tape drive through my amp first? or just right from the tape drive to line in port?

If it's a good receiver, it shouldn't make much of a difference. That's what I do so that I can switch sources easily. Hook the line in of the soundcard to something like "TAPE 2 REC OUT." Make sure you're using the record control, not the play control to adjust the level. Let me know if don't know what I'm talking about with rec/play control. I use Cool Edit Pro to record and edit, and I accept no substitutes. When the recording process is done, center the wave (a preset under transform -> amplitude -> amplify), take a noise sample (record a sample of the tape hiss first), run noise reduction, normalize the volume to 100%, then crop the beginning and end of the wav. Finally, use Nero to split the tracks and burn the CD.

Thanks Garfang, I will try that though I think I will be using the demo version of Cool Edit as $399 is a bit out of my price range lol

Yes, you have to hook the tape drive up to your receiver/preamp first.
