Since piracy and ripping our own are both illegal, I think piracy is the best options since it's cheaper, has the same risks associated, and you don't have to use your own CPU cycles to recode the material. Really, it is in your best interest to see which carries the highest risk of getting caught vs the size of the penalty if you do get caught if you want to use your media the way you want to use it.

No denying the truth, however there has to be a balance. When too many people pirate something, it could put a damper on future creativity, though we havn't seen much of this yet, it's still important to not recommend acts of piracy, keep it as underground as possible. If you wanna do it, do it but keep some control and buy stuff you really enjoy. Personal backups too, it won't kill anyone to buy another copy of a really enjoyable content for a seperate platform.
I occasionally buy the same thing on something else even though i already have it and it's restricted, but their worth it cause i enjoy them.

Well that depends. If I purchase a song on iTunes, I expect to be able to listen to that song wherever I am.

If I buy Grand Theft Auto IV for PC...then I know I am limited to only playing it on PC, so I need to buy it again if I want to play it on Xbox 360.

I have no problem with that.

However, don't sell me a song and then tell me I can only listen to it on an iPod. If that's the case, I'll download the damn thing and listen to it on everything. I didn't buy it because it said "Gangnam Style (iPod only)". I bought it because I thought I was getting Gangnam Style for $1.99...

Actually, if I can take the files from the PC version and make it work on the XBox 360, then I ought to be able to do that. That's how I view Blurays and music.

Well no, because they purposefully engineer games so they can be available on multiple platforms.

I wasn't aware that Apple sells music to only be compatible with one type of device and that you have to buy more than one copy of the same song to hear it on all your music devices.

That isn't the same thing.

Why would you need to take the PC version of the game and make it work on Xbox 360? If you wanted it to work on Xbox 360, you would have bought the game for Xbox 360....

You go to the store, decide what system you want the game on and you buy that version.

I don't go to the store and say hey, I want Nickelback's new CD for iPod only. Also, I want another one of their CD's so I can listen on my Zune.

It's kind of like...Walmart deciding that I cannot buy the explicit version of a CD at their store, even though I REALLY want to buy it from Walmart..but they are telling me what I can and can't buy.

So, I just go home and download the explicit version because I really don't want to go to Best Buy to get it since its so far away from me. Walmart is more convenient and they have the best price.

I disagree. Why is it PC games have gotten WAY cheaper than consoles games? I call it price fixing. Why are regions released at different times and the prices differ so much? Price fixing. PC's aren't locked, consoles are (by nature). Console owners have to pay whatever the price is. Sure they "could" pirate, but the point is games that have been out for over 5 years are still priced the same as when they were new.

They've manipulated the laws to benefit their pocketbooks. I have no respect for any of the segmented industries. I paid for it, I will use it as I see fit. If I own a console and want to make it play something it's not meant to, so be it, I will. At this point (and for years) I really don't care if it's legal or not. They've proven time and again they are the real crooks. If they are so broke, they shouldn't be spending all that money lobbying the politicians. Reverse engineering is illegal? Good luck with that. It's worked so well for you over the years and wait....it's always been illegal.

I don't really see the point you are trying to make with the PC Game vs the Xbox version. You purposefully bought a PC copy because you wanted it on PC.

Now you're saying the industry are crooks for multi-platforming the game?

I don't see it the same way as the music industry, because the gaming industry is giving you a CHOICE.

Buy FarCry 3 on Xbox 360 and it will work in whatever Xbox360 you put it in....but no, you cannot buy it on PC and expect to play it on Xbox360 and Playstation 3 as well. It doesn't work like that and it never has.

Music didn't start working like that until recently. I used to buy CD's, take them home, rip them, and put the disc away somewhere. The music worked regardless if it was playing over my Grandma's car radio or my iPod.

Music has never been multi-platformed like games until recently...only, they don't tell you that you have to make that choice.

I'm with you a bit, but there's still issues with PC software. Some of the DRM makes it a real PITA to use on different machines. The one virus I got was from downloading a Bioshock crack. I reinstalled my O/S, and Bioshock wouldn't activate. I was so pissed, my brain shut down, and I ended up getting a virus trying to fix it.

Fuckers... I paid $70 I think for the deluxe edition, and I have to deal with that kind of bullshit to run the game. I like the franchise, so I bought 2, and will buy 3 when it comes out, but it makes me feel dirty and resentful. Games are the only non-free software I use, with Bioshock being the only DRMd software. DRM can go to hell.

I don't pirate media.

I also very, very rarely purchase media anymore.

I couldn't be happier. I hope the mpaa/riaa/whoeveraa are happy they're conditioning former customers to enjoy life without their product.

It's illegal, but fuck the system. Do it anyway. Especially if you're not redistributing it, how are they going to know? It's sickening how much power the media industry has, that they have the ability to make laws. So much corruption going on it's unbelievable. All this lobbying bullcrap. The entire government should be lined up and shot for allowing this to happen. No company should be able to pay the government to have their way.
Judicial
Legislative
Executive
Monetary - The US government sprouted this 4th branch at some point. It has the ability to override all the others.

Yup, I pirated GTAIV before I ended up buying it because they had too much DRM.

If you wanted to play, you had to log into Games for Windows Live. Then you had to log in to Rockstar Social club and if you weren't logged into GFWL, you couldn't save your game.

So, I pirated the game...and then they finally got rid of those requirements, and I ended up buying GTAIV and all the DLC from Steam because I LOVE Rockstar and if they sold pieces of shit wrapped in a bow..I'd buy it.

I'm not saying you should expect it to, I'm saying if I want to "make" it work (assuming I have the capability) and I paid for it, then it should not be illegal for me to do so. Also, I misread your initial post and meant to edit out the "I disagree" part. That made my context wrong, because I actually highly approve of multi-platform.

However, the "platform" concept is outdated and only used as a control mechanism these days. Can you release something on a platform? Sure. Do you have to invest in putting it on another platform? No, but don't expect it to stay there with today's technology and open forum of information sharing.

This is where morality and the law diverge.

If I've purchased a CD or DVD - and I do want to support the creation of the works I enjoy - there is no moral reason against making a copy for my own personal and private use.

If I find I've purchased an item that prevents making such a copy, I will almost certainly return it for a full refund. If those are their terms, they'll have to find other sources of revenue.

Sure it's legal, but if people are actually buying discs to rip then they'll never actually go after such people. There's enough people that download for free to last them a lifetime.

You should return all your CSS encrypted DVD's. So pretty much all of them.

Don't lie... You didn't buy the content. You bought a non-exclusive terminable license to view the content.

Speak for yourself. In most countries, the content is yours if you buy it and you can do whatever you want with it, providing you do not break copyright.

Just wait... they'll want a scheme soon that has the DVD drive to "phone home" over the intarweb to authorize whatever content action you desire or something stupid like that.

Doesn't bluray already do this? I thought that was one of the reasons people hated it so much is because bluray did this and the hd-dvd format didn't.

Although, I know a lot of people are ripping bluray discs already so it might be just the web enabled content that communicates with a server.

The latest version of I-Tunes / I-Phone, wants you to store your music in "the cloud". So now you need to use data time and fees to get it there and everytime you want to play it. I want it stored locally, where it should be. And to Blu-Ray, I have DVDFAB Platinum, to make copies (for use in my home so the originals do not get damaged) of my regular DVD's if I so desire to do so. But the Blu Ray portion of that program (which I don't have since I do not have/need/want blu ray) does need to connect to the internet to get the decryption keys. Also DVDFAB 9, now no longer uses a License File. It connects to your account at dvdfab.com and if you are licensed for that program, all is well. I have lifetime license, so no worry. But I do not like the program "phoning home" every time you use. So I will stay with latest version 8 release.

Which takes me back to my point in my last post. If too many people pirate, it scares the industry into doing more irrational and restrictive things like you experienced in GTA 4..so thank all those piraters who got greedy, whether it's right or wrong is meaningless cause it's just a reality. It is how "they" respond in a highly competitive world, it is dog eat dog out there ya know. No one likes restrictions yet our entire lives are full of them.

And the ipod music excuse is no good as you can download from Amazon restriction free unless the record company doesn't grant them license which so far appears not to have happened. In cases where it's not, i'm just saying don't make such high habits of it as it only makes things worse for us all.

Entertainment is worth paying for if you are entertained even if it is only on 1 device. If you can't be entertained because it's restricted then don't and just pirate, but make some exceptions for gods sake. However i don't see why music can't be platform specific just as an xbox 360 game cannot play on anything else despite abilities to read the data.
