ripped DVD on VCD, how?

Hi, i have a ~700MB DVD quality movie which i want to burn it as a VCD and watch it on a DVD player(TV)

i got all the movies from a friend through the computer and want to watch it as a normal movie in my familiy room.

what format should i burn it as?

i tried to use Nero to burn it as VCD, but it takes so long(i think it needs the length of the movie to encode)... i am finding a way to convert it and burn it.

thanks

but it takes so long(i think it needs the length of the movie to encode)

That's very normal, especially w/ a slow cpu.

ya, i converted the ripped dvd(700MB) to a mpg formated file(1.6GB)

now the movie is kinda weird... i believe i used the 4:3 display ratio, but now it it like 16:9 but on a 4:3 screen, so everything looks taller.

is it normal?

Dude, you are lucky. Some of my encoding steps take 6x the time of the movie. On an XP1600+.

Somewhere there must be an option "preserve aspect ratio", or a way to force it to be either "16:9" or "4:3". At least there is in TMPGEnc. Play with it.

just want to make sure...
if the movie is already in 16:9 ratio do i still have to set it as 16:9?

it just take too long to test...

i tried to convert a movie from 4:3 to 16:9, but somehow there is no sound in the created mpg.

Faye,

Are you trying to convert a divx file (.avi) to .mpg? If the sound is not working, it's probably that it's encoded with 48kHz instead of 44K. Many DVD-rips are encoded with 48KHz. What you need to do is to separate video and audio and convert the audio to 44K using VirtualDub. By the way, what are you using for the conversion?

i am using TMPGEnc

i have a 16:9 wdie screen movie. no matter i use 4:3 display or 16:9 display... the screen become "thinner" and "taller"...

now i am trying 1:1 VGA ... and i am converting 2 movies at once(load TMPG twice) don't know if it will work, but its worth a shot. 🙂

:Q Ouch! that is gonna take a while doing 2 simultaneously. 😉

In the TMPG settings, under the Video tab, aspect ratio should be 4:3. Under the Advanced tab, source aspect ratio should be 1:1 (VGA).

BTW, encoding 2 movies at once is useless, it won't be any faster. (it might even take more time)

why not use dvd2avi? then convert with tmpgenc...
afterdawn.com has good info also
good luck!

Because he most likely has a DivX movie, not an MPEG-2.
I use TMPGEnc to convert Divx to VCD no problem. What's the issue here?

the problem i have is the image(movie) is squeezed.

the image inside seems taller and thinner.

and another problem i have is a movie that has no sound and a double of frames of other movies.

ex. most movie has 200000frames(or around that) but this movies has 500000frames. what i see is after 200000 frames the image(movie) is freezed

I have found that the guides over at doom9.org to be extremely helpful. Just this weekend I converted Spiderman over the SVCD and my brothers couldn't see much difference betreen the SVCD and the DVD.

ok, using the software doom9.net provided.(dvd2svcd), i now can convert to a 1500MB big movie. then i chop it into 2 files.

now i burn it on cd using Nero. when i do so, it said the movie is in MPEG-2 format and can't be done.

btw, it took me more than 24hrs to convert a 700MB movie to 1500MB movie.

what's wrong?

If you had used DVD2SVCD for the conversion, you have ended up with a svcd (mpeg-2) file. Nero only provides a vcd (mpeg-1) plug-in. To burn it using Nero, you would need to install the svcd plug-in (by the way, it's not free. it'll cost you $16).

My suggest would be to just use VCDEasy (it's freeware). Regarding the "no sound" issue, again, your .avi file is probably encoded with 48Khz (you need to convert it to 44Khz).
Check here for detailed instructions with pictures.

Ulead DVD Movie Factory does the trick. I would also recommend splicing the movie and burning it to SVCD as it offers much better quality if the source is good quality (which it is, because you have a DVD rip).

different btwn SVCD and VCD is just the quality?

i don't know anything about SVCD though...

just took me over a week but still can't anything done... sigh...

I didn't know Ulead DVD Movie Factory can convert a .divx file to a svcd format. I better dig up that installation cd from the basement.

SVCD is much better quality.

VCD = 1150 kbit/sec MPEG-1 CBR only
352 x 240 resolution

SVCD = ~2500 kbit/sec MPEG-2 (if the audio is in 224 kbit/s), audio + video bitrate max bitrate is ~2748 kbit/s CBR or VBR.
480 x 480 resolution
