I renewed my subscription to Anandtech today and in addition to the e-mail about my $30 for that received this:

Dear Xxxxx,

We appreciate your donation to The International Foundation for the Protection of Children.

Your Transaction Number: 1160xxxxxx
Web Site Name: Web Pledge
Donation Date/Time: Thursday, November 14, 2002, 03:39 PM
Credit Card Type: VISA
Credit Card Number: XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX

Today's charge is $1.00

Thank you for using iBill.
If you have any questions regarding this Donation,
please contact web_pledge@ibill.com.

Your credit card will be billed as iBill.

I never checked any box or even saw anything about this until I got the e-mail.

What a ripoff! :disgust:

The check box is checked by default. You need to uncheck it before continuing on.

Like I said ... ripoff. Pay $1 unless you opt out? I never even saw the box.

Less than honorable in my opinion.

AT has no control over this (well unless they change payment programs) because BillPoint automatically sets up the $1 donation.

Are you one of those people who doesn't read the fine print and then wonders why you have a $50 charge on your next statement from some porn site? I'm looking at it now and it's right there in clear print right below the credit card box and above the "I agree to the terms and conditions".

I agree, if you're inputting you CC info and you see "checked" or "un-checked" boxes, you really should read the fine print, just my opinion.

I saw it there; think it was right near the Submit button; pretty easy to see in my opinion. It asks you if you want to donate a dollar to something; don't remember what. It even explains under the checkbox .
Yeah, just checked it out - below the section for CC and personal info is a checkbox for the $1 donation, which is explained:
"I agree to the One Time Deductible $1 Donation to the International Foundation For The Protection Of Children. The charge on your credit card statement will appear as WebPldg.org"
Then below that is the checkbox " I agree to the Terms and Conditions and Refund Policy", then is the Secure Purchase button.

wireless, I agree in that it should not be checked, but we have NO control over it, it has nothing to do with AT at all as it's entirely their site and their content. We are looking however at doing our own internal e-comm in the future.

Wireless, I too did not look close enough or read the fine print
rolleye.gif
. When I received the same email as you did about the dollar, I just replied to the email and let them know my dissatisfaction with their deceitful practice. They credited my dollar the next day.

It had nothing to do with the dollar. It just pissed me off they snuck it in there.:|

If no one brings it up/complains than change will never be effected. (usage?)

It has been brought up many times before, it's nothing new.

You must remember that the word search is a new concept to many of the posters here.

To be fair, you really must subscribe to use the Search function in a decent manor.

Dammit, how come *I* didn't get a nice house to search from when I subscribed?! RIPOFF!!! 😛

Hey if anybody thinks that this site isn't worth the money for subscription I hear that Hard OCP is looking for a few thousand new members to replace the few thousand they banned during the course of the last week. Maybe Kyle will even give you some kind of special deal, like truthful and honest hardware reviews..then again maybe not🙂

Well, it may not be a new thing but that shouldnt stop people from giving reminders or voicing opinions. Look at what happened to TD when Anandtechers starting voicing...
