April 5, 2002 Layne Staley died alone after a drug overdose at the age of 34. He was not found until approximately 2 weeks later.

Partial Last Interview (more found on MTV linked there)

Exerpt: ""This f---ing drug use is like the insulin a diabetic needs to survive," he said. "I'm not using drugs to get high like many people think. I know I made a big mistake when I started using this sh--. It's a very difficult thing to explain. My liver is not functioning and I'm throwing up all the time and sh---ing my pants. The pain is more than you can handle. It's the worst pain in the world. Dope sick hurts the entire body.""

RIP Layne, your music and emotional lyrics are missed.

His stories are just sad to read. He couldn't kick the drug habit. At one of his interview he had to leave half way through, when he came back he had puncture marks in his hands b/c he had tapped out the veins in this arms. He wore long sleeves and gloves a lot to try and hide it. A lot of his songs are about fighting innner demons or about losing loved ones, they are quite powerful and emotional. Sad story indeed.

They are both dead vocalists. Sounds like apples and apples to me...

It's prudent to watch AiC's unplugged set today, which I commonly refer to as Layne's funeral.

I ask myself, over and over.... wtf was his family.

If you know someone you love is addicted to something, you usually keep a close eye on them. and if you dont hear from them in a certain time frame, then you go looking. And I dont know about others, but if someone I loved were in trouble, I would have them locked up until they are no longer a danger to themselves.

thing is, imho, he became such a fat cash cow that those that could have helped him were too focused on the $$$!

His dad was more addicted to heroin than he was and he continually took money from him to support the habit. If you want to find something more powerful than family, you can't do much better than heroin.

you think no one tried?
the man struggled with drug addiction for years and years.
yeah its easy to judge his friends and family for 'not being there' but i can see how it can be easy to get disillusioned when the person youre trying to help wants no part of it. eventually, they will all give up. his bandmates, his friends, his family, his fans.
no matter what you say or do, they have to quit on their own free will. and junk is not an easy one to kick.

IIRC, one of the reasons AiC stopped touring was b/c the rest of the band saw how much worse his addiction got while on tour.

Would it be over the top to get something like AIC SunPatch tattooed at the top of my back along with some black designs and/or flames off the sides of it? :)

While I understand what the replies to my post are, I still maintain that someone should have had him locked up for his own good and kept there until he was not a danger to himself.

Drug addiction is hard to kick, but not impossible.

My best friend got a tatoo of a design based on that AiC design.

Like it or not...you can't force someone to beat an addiction.
