The Broadway League has reversed their (likely politically motivated) illogical decision and will now be rightfully dimming the lights on Broadway for Joan Rivers.

Broadway League backs down, agrees to honor Joan Rivers
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/joan-rivers-will-be-honored-by-broadway/

The league had said Monday that Rivers did not meet the criteria for the honor, triggering a controversy when several theater owners said they would turn off their marquee lights Tuesday anyway. An online petition was launched and several celebrities came out in favor of granting the honor.

The Broadway League told the New York Times that it concluded that Rivers did not meet the criteria for dimming the lights on theater marquees in the traditional industry honor for celebrities who have performed on Broadway.

Charlotte St. Martin of the Broadway League said the group dims lights for deceased people who have "very active recently" on the Great White Way.

The league changed course Tuesday afternoon, saying the lights would dim at 6:45 p.m. for one minute.

"Joan Rivers loved Broadway and we loved her," Charlotte St. Martin, the league's executive director, said in a statement. "Due to the outpouring of love and respect for Joan Rivers from our community and from her friends and fans worldwide, the marquees of Broadway theatres in New York will be dimmed in her memory tonight."

Rivers, who died Thursday at 81, was known primarily as a TV actress and comedian, though she was seen as a champion of Broadway and off-Broadway shows and earned a Tony Award nomination.

Before the league's reversal, 10 theaters -- out of 40 -- were set to break with the league and dim their lights. Jordan Roth, owner of Jujamcyn Theaters, which runs five theaters in New York, tweeted Monday that his venues would pay tribute.

Joan Rivers vocal coach asks some great questions regarding the minimally invasive medical procedure that eventually took Joan's life.

Joan Rivers’ Former Vocal Coach Claims, ‘She Didn’t Have To Die’http://radaronline.com/exclusives/2014/09/joan-rivers-vocal-coach-claims-she-didnt-have-to-die/

Glass has many questions about her former client’s care and procedure at the facility, which is now under investigation.

“What type of procedure did Joan have? Was Joan having a laryngeal endoscopic procedure done so that the physician can visualize the vocal cords to check for how they function or whether there is paralysis, vocal nodules, or vocal ulcers?” Glass questioned.

“If so, Joan wouldn’t or shouldn’t have been under any form of anesthesia because the doctor needs to communicate with the patient to see how the vocal chords contract.”

She went on to say, “So if Joan was undergoing this simple non invasive non life threatening procedure, what happened? Why was her airway cut off? Did someone do the procedure improperly? Was a technician doing the procedure or was it a licensed physician? I have to ask these questions because it seems odd to me that her airway would be closed off.

Also lets say her airway was closed off, why did a clinic of this kind or any kind not have life saving equipment to open her airway? If she had a heart attack, why was there no immediate cardiac life saving devices on the premises? Why was she deprived of oxygen for any length of time? Why wasn’t she given oxygen immediately? This bothers me. Why were there not life saving emergency devices available and if they were why weren’t they implemented ASAP?”

Rivers’ death is under investigation by the NYPD, and the New York Medical Examiner is also reviewing her death stating last week that the “cause and manner” of Rivers‘ death will “require further studies.”

Glass also knows, “I have no doubt that with the resources available to Melissa there will be a thorough investigation as to what actually happened and who may be possibly responsible.”

https://tv.yahoo.com/news/joan-rivers-air-supply-cut-off-unexpected-throat-022500055.html

Putting the two articles together kinda makes sense. She was having a vocal cord endoscopy done without sedation (a normal occurence) and the doctor found the nodule and decided to biopsy it. The vocal cords are very sensitive and can spasm shut when disturbed, when this happens they are locked closed and air cannot enter the lungs. Fluid can be drawn into the lungs when the vocal cords are closed (negative pressure pulmonary edema) which can in effect drown the lungs from the inside, though I doubt that an 80 year old woman would have the necessary chest strength to do so. At any rate, an anesthesiologist worth their salt should be able to handle such an emergency, its happened to me a few times in my career, you simply give more amnestic or a muscle relaxant to break the spasm and manually ventilate until the patient can breath on their own. As it seems, this was supposed to be a procedure without sedation so there was no one around to deal with the emergency.

Without the pressure of a malpractice suit filed by the River's family, I don't see a clinic currently under state investigation being forthcoming with details under patient confidentiality laws.

First of all, the Yorkville Endoscopy clinic doesn't have any ENT's (capable of performing a biopsy) on staff. Joan allegedly visited this clinic for a routine minimally invasive endoscopy, which wouldn't have required heavy anesthesia.

According to some news reports, Joan's own doctor was present and allowed to perform this unplanned and therefore unauthorized biopsy, which eventually seized her vocal cords and blocked air into her lungs. Some are also speculating that Joan suffered, not just from cardiac and respiratory arrest during the procedure, but also a stroke.

Yorkville Endoscopy Releases Biopsy Statement Amid Joan Rivers Rumors
http://www.nbcnews.com/pop-culture/...psy-statement-amid-joan-rivers-rumors-n200361

The private New York City clinic where Joan Rivers stopped breathing while undergoing an outpatient procedure on her vocal cords released a statement Wednesday about the clinic's care following a report that alleged an unplanned biopsy was performed at the facility. "A biopsy of vocal cords has never been performed at Yorkville Endoscopy," the clinic said in a statement.

The clinic, citing confidentiality rules, made it clear that it was not providing specific information about Rivers or any other patient, but rather was describing its standard practices. "General anesthesia has never been administered at Yorkville Endoscopy," the clinic said. "The type of sedation used at Yorkville Endoscopy is monitored anesthesia care. Our anesthesiologists utilize light to moderate sedation."

The New York Daily News, citing an anonymous medical source familiar with the case, had reported Wednesday that a doctor who traveled with Rivers to the clinic allegedly performed a biopsy that caused the legendary comic's vocal cords to seize up. The doctor allegedly asked the clinic's staff if he could use the facility's instruments when a doctor there spotted "something" on the performer's vocal cords, the Daily News reported.

In response to NBC News' inquiries about Joan Rivers' medical procedure and Yorkville Endoscopy, the New York State Department of Health told NBC News they are "investigating the matter." Rivers stopped breathing during a vocal cords procedure on August 28 and went into "respiratory or cardiac arrest," according to the New York Fire Department. She was then rushed to Mount Sinai hospital, where she died last Thursday at 81.

So... huge lawsuit, Slew Foot?

Im not exactly sure what her consent says. If it was for endoscopy only, then performing a bx that leads to death is technically manslaughter, not malpractice. At any rate, id need more definitive info before i could make any conclusions.

I was just at the 5th Avenue Synagogue and her building is right next to it. So many flowers were there. Even a Yankees cap...

The ENT who irresponsibly performed this alleged biopsy outside a hospital setting has yet to be named. My own speculation is that s/he's a close personal doctor friend.

While I could see Melissa pursuing a solid case against the endoscopy clinic for ultimately permitting this procedure, she would also need to reveal this visiting doctor/friend. Perhaps Melissa's content enough to allow the furor die in peace along with her mom. The press seems out for blood way more than a fiercely loyal Rivers family. Who knows?

Watching Joan get high on medical marijuana (with fellow comedian Lynne Koplitz) is hysterical. She was truly one of a kind. lol

I'm ~13 minutes into this (started it from the beginning). Joan was a funny Jewish celebrity with a New York accent, and evidently basically a really nice person. That's my impression of this documentary style show. I'm going to watch the rest of this...

Edit: For a woman of 78, I must say she looked fabulous.

She was 81. Or did you mean three years ago on the show?

Yeah, during the show it was mentioned that she was 78, so I assume it happened 3 years ago. She had the sweet twinkle-eyed countenance of a teenager! For a woman reputed to have an unrestricted tongue, she seemed to have a real shy streak in there. She didn't just reach for funny, she was genuinely witty. That (episode of the) show is pretty endearing.

CNN is reporting that Joan's cardiac arrest indeed happened during a biopsy performed by her personal doctor. This caused her vocal cords to swell and eventually cut off oxygen to the lungs. Allegedly this doctor took a selfie before the procedure after Joan was placed under anesthesia.

Just found this interview with Joan at her best. It's basically twenty minutes of sidesplitting rapid-fire jokes to an appreciative crowd.

Probably no one cares anymore, but the personal doctor who allegedly performed the unauthorized biopsy has been revealed to be Dr. Gwen Korovin. This ENT is doctor to a vast array of movie, television and Broadway stars. I'd also say she's quite the fame whore with pictures of famous people inappropriately (imo) lining her office walls; therefore, a story regarding her taking celebrity patient selfies does seem plausible.

Dr. Korovin kept tight-lipped - even disclosing nothing to her own patients - about her involvement in Joan's procedure until being outed by TMZ. I guess she figured HIPPA privacy would only be broken if Melissa (who wasn't in attendance during the operation) decided to sue. Perhaps she underestimated the interest in an 81yo death and thought the story would go away.

FWIW, the medical director of the center, and the dr who did the endoscopy before the throat procedure, DR. Cohen, is a vocal proponent of surgeons doing (and billing for) their own anesthesia during surgery. There was no anesthesiologist present during the case, and thus, no one trained in advanced airway management.

Confirming what I see in medicine, never trust a jewish doctor.
