I heard Hillary Clinton was named after him.

edit: FYI - there's a heavy amount of sarcasm in this post

I know you can't trust Wikipedia entirely, but:
Tenzing and Hillary were the first people to conclusively set their feet on the summit of Mount Everest, but journalists were persistently repeating the question which of the two men had the right to the glory of being the first one, and who was merely the second, the follower. Tenzing stressed the unity of such teams and of their achievements. He shrugged off the allegation of ever being pulled by anyone, but disclosed that Hillary was the first to put his foot on the summit. He concluded: "If it is a shame to be the second man on Mount Everest, then I will have to live with this shame."

The article says differently, that would be my only reason to dispute this. To be honest I only knew they never told anyone from a report I did in grade school, but because the article mentioned it I thought I remembered correctly.

Anyway he was an amazing man regardless, I probably just have a misunderstanding of the whole situation.

RIP what a courageous hero. Now this is a guy who actually went out and risked his life to achieve one of the last great feats of mankind. Have fun climbing all the mountains for eternity!

While I'm personally fascinated with mountian climbing (more books than actual experience), I can't go so far as to say that being the first to climb Mt Everest should rank among mankinds greatest achievements. It's certainly a testament to his personal determination and physical strength.

What matters more to me about Hillary is that he handled the fame and attention much better than most, and leveraged it to do good things in New Zealand and Nepal.

1st or 2nd man to summit Everest, it really doesn't matter, either way he's an incredible man. RIP

Well, she can move mountains...

For years, Hillary Clinton was going around claiming that she was named after the first person to reach the summit of Mt. Everest, Sir Edmund Hillary. This has been reported as ?fact? as late as a week ago in the New York Times. It didn?t take long for somebody to notice that the numbers didn?t add up, and that was years ago. After being reminded of the lie, yet again, Hillary has recanted the claim via a sweet story of family history with this explanation:

For more than a decade, Sen. Clinton?s informal biography repeated the story, and it was recounted in former President Bill Clinton?s 2004 autobiography, ?My Life.?

The problem with the tale, however, is one of timing. Sir Edmund and his Sherpa guide, Tenzing Norgay, became known to the world only in 1953, after becoming the first men to reach Everest?s summit. Sen. Clinton was born in 1947.

 to Sir Edmund Hillary though. We don't have many great feats like this anymore.

Have you actually read the 13 or so posts above yours? He's the first man ever to climb Everest.

No, he was the first to reach the summit. Others had climbed before but failed to reach the top.

I was going to compliment him on never revealing who made it to the top first, him or Tenzing Norgay, because the two had made a pact to never say. In the article it credits him for keeping his mouth shut until 'long after Norgay's death,' which I'm not sure is commendable.

If you take a negative outlook, Tenzing could have been the first. It's not like Tenzing could have refuted him from the grave when Edmund decided to reveal that he was the one. I agree that he should have just chosen to not reveal it in the first place, but either way, what they did was a remarkable accomplishment.

RIP Ed, you were a great man

His death was mourned by the Sherpa community, for whom he set up the Himalayan Trust in the 1960s, helping to build dozens of schools and hospitals.

"We consider him as a second father," said Zimba Zangbu Sherpa, vice president of the Nepal Mountaineering Association.

"His work changed the life of the whole Sherpa community. Without his work, especially the schools, the Sherpas would be nowhere."

According to this article Tenzing said Hillary was the first.

It wasn't until years later that Tenzing finally revealed exactly who reached the summit first: "A little below the summit Hillary and I stopped. We looked up. Then we went on. The rope that joined us was thirty feet long, but I held most of it in loops in my hand, so that there was only about six feet between us. I was not thinking of "first" and "second." I did not say to myself "There is a golden apple up there. I will push Hillary aside and run for it." We went on slowly, steadily. And then we were there. Hillary stepped on top first. And I stepped up after him."

What about all of the locals that actually carried all their shit? Don't they get some of the limelight as well?

maybe you should read something about his achievements with the Himalayan Trust before you do stupid comments. He was deeply concerned about the well being of the Sherpa people

It's hard as hell in 2008 with preset ladders and ropes all the way up, as well as modern lightweight outerwear and gear and established camps.

He was a real hero for his country (and the world).
