We live in a 'younger' neighborhood with a lot of kids but we actually shared a driveway with an older semi-retired Marine. He was great with the kids, loved to play with our dog, kept he house and yard in great shape, and wasn't noisy.

We saw him last Wednesday afternoon. He didn't put out his garbage Thursday morning but we thought he may have gone to D.C. for Veterans Day. We discussed going to his door on Friday and checking on him but didn't (even then do you call 911 if someone doesn't answer the door?). His son found him on Sunday. Apparently he had a heart attack on Wednesday night and died in his sleep.

You don't call 911, but you can call the police or FD and ask for a "welfare check."

RIP Marine.

Yep I was about to say the same. BUT I thought the only thing they can do for a WC is knock on the door and look in the windows. Unless they see someone on the floor, blood spill, etc... they can;t do anything else.

RIP. My last apartment was next to an older WWII veteran. He was always super nice and loved telling stories of his tours while in the service. Everytime I was outside working on my car, he'd come outside and keep me company. Everytime we'd meet in the halls, he'd stop and ask me about my life, work, gf, cars, etc. It was always nice talking to him. He didn't have any kids and lived in the apartment by himself. I regret never inviting him over for a cup of coffee. I lost touch with him since I moved out of the place 🙁

We've gained access for less. Most of the time the place is empty, but every so often it was a good thing we entered.

Oh I agree it helps to get in ASAP if the person needs help, BUT if someone found out that the police/paramedic's would kick in doors for WC then plenty of assholes would call about the person they don;t like for a WC when they know they are not home. i.e. do it from a pay phone of course. :sneaky:

Thats so sad I hope I find an Old guy who lives near me who's nice like that

Get off my lawn ya little puke!

I've been fortunate to have a few good neighbors like that Marine. They're USUALLY the "stand-up" guy who does the right thing...even when it's not easy or convenient for them.

Isn't that what the marines teach?
