RIP DSM Lancer Evolution

According to Gayu Eusegi, head of global product development for Mitsubishi, the Lancer Evolution X will be the last Evo the Japanese automaker ever builds. Eusegi says the move is part of a shift in strategy to put the company's product focus and ethos on leadership in EV technology.

To that end, Autocar indicates that Mitsubishi will release eight fully-electric or hybrid-electric cars by the time 2015 rolls around, and make a grab for a big portion of the CO2-reduction market share. It goes without saying that the fun-yet-fuel-swilling Evo just doesn't fit that mindset, particularly since it apes a rally car that no longer exists.

Despite the Evo's huge popularity, Mitsubishi apparently isn't scared of the step and says it's confident that consumers will glom on to the idea and rally behind the brand. By killing the Evo, they're making their intentions plain to an increasingly environmentally-conscious car-buying public.

Eusegi killed dead any notion that the brand would roll out a performance-oriented hybrid as well. "Maybe the world can change, and maybe someday we can do a motor race by electric vehicles. Maybe then we can enter the market agian," he said.

This report of the Evo's death would seem to stand in contrast to multiple reports that an Evo XI is in the works with a hybrid drivetrain. We're taking this latest Autocar missive with a few grains of salt, as we can see how Eusegi may have simply meant that an Evo that relies exclusively on internal combustion is dead – a hybrid Evo would seem to offer a nice technological bridge to Mitsubishi's more electrically minded future.

Can't say I'm all that surprised given Mitsu's horrible financial position, but this does fill my heart with sadness to see it pretty much official. While I really don't like the current STI this can't bode well for Subie fans either - without any competition how long is it going to be before it also gets the axe?

Given the next big thing is the weaksauce Toybaru with RWD and wimpy NA 2.0 boxer I think the glory days are over my friends.

Perhaps, if they keep making Lancers that are AWD capable, they can spin off the Evo building to a 3rd party? Sort of like how you can buy a Mustang GT and then have it Shelbyfied into a full 620hp GT350?

Idk, just thinking out loud. If anything, one would think this would boost STI sales after Evo is not an option? Look at Mustang sales at the first post-Camaro refresh ('05+), they went through the roof, as all the secretaries and spoiled teen daughters got the V6 models with no choice of getting a Camaro.

tho i would never buy a new evo. (too much money for what you get) this will mean that price of used evo will stay afloat.

kinda sad tho. But all good cars come to an end and will never come back. I think mitsu is going to tank now. I thought the evo was the only thing bring in customers. What else did/do they make REALLY good?

I'm not sure how it is in other countries, but Mitsubishi in the US has been damned near DOA for a long time now, they mostly sell trashboxes to rental agencies. TBH, the Evo is kind of a pile of shit, although at least it's a fast pile of shit. The whole point of the Evo and WRX/STI was to make a rally racer out of an existing econobox anyway. Which they did a great job of, but it's still an econobox, but suddenly a turbo awd tech-gizmo econobox with a giant freaking wing and trick accent styling.

Couldn't agree more. I'd much rather a WRX for it's 15K dollar less price tag

This is nothing new. They were talking about this a few years ago. Mitsubishi has been in trouble financially for a while now and there were talks of getting rid of the Evo a few years ago.

Hopefully Mazda and Subaru will continue to make fun stuff.

/prays for a Mazdaspeed2 - 200hp and 20k and 35mpg

the new subieyota is finally taking shape, hopefully they don't price it out of the market. anything over 25k will be immediate fail - it needs to compete with the hot hatches and the genesis 2.0t - so 20-23k

I'd much rather have them kill it then turn it into a bloated girls car a la the Eclipse.

As a drivers car it though it was pretty amazing and had a legendary run. I can remember reading Sports Compact Car in the late 90's drooling over the Evo VII and how it could run 13's on gravel, then after sooo many years they finally brought them over.

Sadly it feels like a small part of my youth is dead. In any case, I feel the VIII and IX could be potential semi-classics someday.

Just traded in my EVO X about a week ago for a Sonata... this makes me sad... hopefully one day Mitsubishi will be in a good stance to have the EVO available to the masses again. *sniff*

Subieyota?

Dumb idea. Evo is Mitsu's Halo car. The only reason people still haven't forgotten Mitsu is the Evo. It even styles many of it's cars and SUVs to look like Evo. It's the soul of the company.

I am a little sad for you too...

Most people already have forgotten the company. No idea why they even have a presence in the US. I don't know a single person who owns one, nor can I think of even one in my entire neighborhood. It is an irrelevant brand in the US with no meaningful sales. Like Suzuki. Each sell about 100k/year.

The mitsu dealer in OC is a sad/hilarious sight. Its this huge ass lot, with like 15 cars for sale on it. Only a few of those outlander crap things and a couple Evos.

It almost makes you want to buy one just because of how pathetic it looks.

Oh, I don't know... WRX around my area (WI/IL) are selling like hotcakes. Dealers can't keep them in stock.

The new gen WRX really does feel a lot more grown-up than the older econobox-rice versions that preceded it.
