My P4 3.4ghz runs a 6800GT in it with 2 harddisks, 2 DVD drives, 4 case fans and watercooling kit and all I use is a Antec 380 watter....it's never given any problems, a 350w with a 7600GT should be fine, the 7600GT uses less power than a 6800GT and a A64 single core uses less power than P4 so you should be fine.

ASrock 775Dual-VSTA $58

Supports Core 2 duo CPUs as well as Pentium Ds. Also it can use DDR and DDR2 memory. (but not at the same time) It is AGP/PCI-e compatible.

For the CPU

Intel Pentium D 830, 3.0ghz dual core for $90.

This will allow you to re use your DDR400 PC3200 memory. You get dual core as well. Now for the GPU.

BFG 7600GT for $89 AR

Total of 230ish dollars.

That Pentium D is OEM, meaning it comes with no heatsink.

Yea add in some good CPU cooler. Another 20 dollars or so and his set.

I probably won't ever get a core 2 duo though, by the time I would get one they would probably be out of date.

I was reading some reviews about the 820 D and it seems like some people were saying it wasn't running games for as good as they thought a 3ghz should. Does this hold for the 830 D? I also read that the stock heatsinks still werent cooling off the 820, does the 830 run hot as well?

And what would be the major benefits of dual core for me? Multi-tasking? Or will I find a boost in performance in all aspects of computing?

I've always been an AMD person myself. They have always provided me with good performace for reasonable prices.

Thanks for the information as well cookie.

Looked at some replacement fans and decided it wasn't worth it to shell out any more money on it.

I bought an interim card instead to hold me over until I was ready to build a new system (recently finished, specs in sig) and settled on a BFG GeForce 6800GS OC. Pretty nice card, other options at the time were the 7600GS, 7800GS (too pricey though), and the 7600GT. I kinda wish I bought the Leadtek 7600GT, but oh well.

The above options are still viable, and the 7800GS has dropped in price and can be had for $200 or less (with rebates). If you're looking to really extend the life of your current rig however, there's the X1950s in AGP that just came out recently, but they'll run you $250-300.

RIP to a great video card, my 9700pro will always be one of my favorites.

I love mine!

If not here are my options.

The expensive but atleast double performance given.

BFG 6800GS OC for $135 After rebate

Unlockable since they use the old NV40 core. So you can get 6800ultra performance with a bit of OCing and unlocking. (if your lucky)

XFX 7600GT AGP $180

powercolor X1650XT AGP $170

(X1650XT are faster than the 7600GT overall)

Or the cheaper cards

Any X1600pro/7600G.

You could look for used cards in the FS/Ft section.

All of the Pentium D 8xx series run hot. The Pentium D 9xx series run a little cooler and better, though.

Should the pentium d 8xx series out perform the amd athlon 64 3500+? I like a lot of the hardware you listed LW07, but if I could get a dual core for cheap would that be a better route?

The dual cores will be better in the future when multithreaded games come out, so yes, I would look at a dual core. But for today's games, it won't perform as well as a 3500+. You won't tell a difference, though. So I would get a dual core.

Is the future upgrade path a concern for you? Like, the ability to make future upgrades without changing out the motherboard, ram, and all the rest?

Yeah, I would like the ability to only upgrade certain parts if necessary. My last upgrade was so long ago that I'm stuck with an a7n8x deluxe, ddr pc 3200 ram, 9800 pro, and an only amd athlon 3200.

So if I change one thing I almost have to change everything. So being able to upgrade in only certain areas would be very nice.

My suggestion sounds to good to miss aye?

:p

Although the PD 830 is slower than the AMD 3500 in gaming in CPU limited games, i do think the PD 830 will do you good (i should tell you to leave the gaming framerates to the GPU though). The reason Hyper threading was good to P4 chips was that it made things smoother. So i do think, it will greatly improve multitasking and computing in general if you decide to grab the PD 830.

You could possibly listen to itunes, play a game while doing some other aplication just fine.

Save some money and then buy core2 duo 4300 around April/May when it takes a price cut to $113 dollars. Since asrock support core 2 duo processors.

Not to mention release of mid range 8600/8300 series around that time. (PCI-e lane on the Asrock 775Dual-VSTA is only at x4 not x16 but wont really affect the performance as long as you are buying a mid/low range PCI-e video card.)

So i think your all set. By june you could well have a core 2 duo machine with a DX10 GPU easily out performing your current rig for very little money.

Note - asrock 775dual-VSTA board works best with either DDR400 PC3200 or DDR2 533 PC4200 memory. Gives you top performance.

I think that would be a perfect idea.

I would just get this 6800XT AGP 4x/8X for $99.99 plus shipping and keep your current rig for a while, and then report back in April/May and save up until then, and then we could figure out a good build for you then, when the Core 2 E4300 and Geforce 8600s are out.

Otherwise, the Pentium D route would be a good route.

Yeah thats not a bad idea at all if the c2d's are going to be in the low mid 100's range. I might just save up for a while and get a temp vga to hold me over.

Thanks LW07 and cookie for both of your help.

I just opened up Photoshop 7 to:

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q6/slackzmaster/lol2.gif

Could it possibly be my monitor going bad, or possibly bad drivers? Note, that sometimes I get no distortion for periods of time. (Which has me wondering if maybe its not the vga)

It makes sense it could be the monitor because I've tried everything with the vga and no improvement, but never thought too much about the monitor.

Been busy with school so I'll keep you informed on what I find when I mess around with it.

My 9800P died on me with similar artifacts in 3d, but perfect 2d....try applying AS5 on the card hsf and report back...

Don't bother with the 820 D or any other non-C2D cpu. You really want the C2D... trust me on this.

The prices on the C2D's are also set to drop in a couple months too and a Conroe-based cpu is the way to go if you want the best out there right now. Forget about clockspeeds... I went from a 3.45Ghz P4 w/ HT to a C2D at 2.13Ghz and it was roughly twice as fast with the same parts(ddr, agp, etc) on a lowly ASRock 775Dual-VSTA. If you want a cheap and extremely noticable upgrade look to this combo... you will thank me. ;)

I've transitioned to a DS3 and the C2D is still making me grin. Text :)

Same. It seems to be a memory issue; I've set the memory frequency back to 270Mhz, and it takes longer for artifacts to show up (in some cases I don't get any at all).

I pretty much upgraded just in time :x.
